Activation Policies for the Unemployed, the Right to Work and the Duty to Work
Since the 1990s and the 2000s, Western social protection systems have experienced a turn towards activation. This turn consists of the multiplication of measures aimed at bringing those who are unemployed closer to participation in the labour market. These measures often induce a strengthening of the conditions that must be met in order to receive social benefits. It is in this well known context that the authors gathered in this book decided to take a closer look at the relationship between activation policies for the unemployed and the right and the duty to work. If activation measures are likely to increase transitions towards the labour market, we can also make the assumption that they may, particularly when they are marked with the seal of coercion, hinder or dramatically reduce the right to freely chosen work. In such circumstances, the realisation of the "right to work", which is often stated to be the aim of those who promote activation, tends in practice to be reduced to an increasing pressure being exerted on the unemployed. In this case, isn't it actually the duty to work that is particularly reinforced ? After an historical and philosophical perspective on the issue, this assumption is confronted with the developments observed in the United States and in France, and then with the guidelines laid down in international human rights instruments. What follows is a discussion of two alternatives to the dominant activation model : the basic income guarantee and the employment guarantee.

The Undergrowth of Science. Delusion, self-deception and human frailty
Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Unreason and credulity supervene, illusory phenomena are described and measured, and theories are developed to explain them - until suddenly, often for no single reason, the bubble bursts, leaving behind it a residue of acrimony, recrimination, embarrassment and ruined reputations.
Here, then, are radiations, measured with high precision yet existing only in the minds of those who observed them; the Russian water, which some thought might congeal the oceans: phantom diseases which called for heroic surgery; monkey testis implants that restored the sexual powers of ageing roués and of tired sheep; truths about genetics and about the nature of matter, perceptible only to Aryan scientists in the Third Reich or Marxist ideologues in the Soviet Union; and much more. The Undergrowth of Science explores, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the history of such episodes, up to our own time, in ail their absurdity, tragedy and pathos.

This study reconstructs Brittain's feminist theory, which mainly refutes assumptions made about women, supports companionate marriage, and demands the communal reorganization of child care and domestic work to enable a married woman to work outside her home. It compares her theory to her five novels. Doing so, it uncovers revealing feminist 'flaws', above all that marriage remains, the sine qua non for a woman's happiness. The study describes Brittain's way to the top as a formidable obstacle race, in which she constantly had to fight the men she loved, her children, her parents, and resulting domesticity in order to find time to write "the book of the decade". She reached her goal with the publication of Testament of Youth in 1933.

Publié à l'occasion de la première rétrospective en France de Jeremy Deller, lauréat du prestigieux Turner Prize en 2004 et représentant de son pays à la Biennale internationale d'art contemporain de Venise en 2013, Art is Magic dresse le panorama le plus complet de son travail des années 1990 à ce jour, à partir d'une quinzaine de projets et d'oeuvres majeures qui ont ponctué son parcours. Jeremy Deller s'intéresse aux cultures populaires et aux contre-cultures. Les questions sociales, l'histoire, mais aussi la musique, sont au centre des investigations de l'artiste. Teintées d'un discours socio-politique assumé, ses oeuvres font un lien entre la culture - vernaculaire ou de masse - et le monde du travail. Ses recherches l'ont mené à explorer l'histoire sociale de son pays et du monde à travers les conflits sociaux de l'ère thatchérienne, le groupe Depeche Mode, le monde du catch, les ferments du Brexit, ou encore l'Acid house et le mouvement rave, avec le souci constant d'impliquer d'autres personnes dans le processus créatif. Art is Magic constitue une tentative de relier les oeuvres clés de la carrière de Jeremy Deller avec l'art, la musique pop, le cinéma, la politique et l'histoire qui ont inspiré son travail. Deller a fait couler beaucoup d'encre au fil des décennies, mais c'est la première fois qu'il rassemble toutes ses sources culturelles. L'ouvrage est divisé en trois sections : un guide visuel de ses oeuvres préférées, des réflexions approfondies sur sa vie et sa pratique artistique et, enfin, un album d'images expliquant ce qui le motive (de Rod Stewart aux chauves-souris, du juke-box parfait aux têtes de hache néolithiques). Le livre présente des oeuvres qui ont jalonné la vie et la carrière de Deller, la plupart inédites. S'y entrecroisent ainsi son installation gonflable pour le festival international de Glasgow, la grève des mineurs (son film sur la bataille d'Orgreave), les chauves-souris (sujet d'au moins trois des oeuvres de Deller), Andy Warhol (qu'il a rencontré en 1986), les liens entre la révolution industrielle et le heavy metal, et les busards cendrés picorant les yeux d'un député conservateur (figurant dans sa fresque contre la chasse au gibier créée pour la Biennale de Venise). Publié à l'occasion de l'exposition Jeremy Deller : Art is Magic au Frac Bretagne, au Musée des beaux-arts et à La Criée, centre d'art contemporain, Rennes, en 2023.

Sous ce titre est regroupé un ensemble de recherches concernant les " Interfaces entre le Vivant et le Technique ". Le terme d'interfaces est entendu en un sens assez large pour englober les divers aspects sous lesquels peuvent être abordés les processus et les formes dont les rapports complexes se situent au carrefour de questions à la fois anciennes et profondément renouvelées.
Ainsi les interfaces entre ordre biologique et ordre technologique ont été envisagées sous l'angle des tentatives de modélisation prenant appui sur l'un pour comprendre l'autre ou dépasser leur opposition ; des interactions entre ce qui relève de l'évolution des formes vivantes et des milieux naturels d'une part, du développement des moyens techniques et capacités d'intervention humaine d'autre part ; enfin des régulations internes ou externes, spontanées ou subordonnées à des références éthiques, à des projets de sociétés ou à des perspectives politiques.
La question posée par la confrontation globale des deux ordres - ce qui relève de la " vie ", ce qui relève de la " technique " - est donc abordée à la fois dans ses dimensions épistémologiques et dans ses dimensions normatives, resituées sur l'horizon philosophique d'interrogations aussi anciennes que l'histoire de notre pensée et des oppositions à partir desquelles elle se déploie.
Mais cette question prise en sa plus large extension trouve dans des domaines plus précis des résonances toutes particulières. Ainsi, à cette réflexion sur l'ensemble associant et opposant ce qui provient des morphogenèses biologiques et ce qui prend son essor dans l'Art humain, s'ajoutent des analyses portant plus précisément sur la confrontation (modélisation, interactions, interventions, régulations...) entre " Cerveau et Ordinateur ".

Au nom de la Police Galactique, Secret a proposé un marché à Cobra. S'il rapporte le Parchemin de Marla, une carte indiquant la source de toute magie dans l'univers, son casier judiciaire sera complètement effacé. Après diverses péripéties, Cobra, aidé de Jeeta, entre possession du parchemin mais son ami, Mario le Marionnettiste, lui apprend que la mission a changé et qu'il lui faut désormais découvrir l'emplacement de la source magique. Son chemin croise alors celui de Lana, une jeune étudiante en magie, et de Dracula, troisième descendant du célèbre vampire terrien. De son côté, la Guilde a envoyé le terrible Mega Khan pour trouver la source et la Résistance, une force qui tente de leur tenir tête. Suivant les traces de Cobra, ce dernier investit le château de Dracula avec ses commandos et démasque les partisans de la Résistance, qu'il confie à Vargas, un marchand d'esclaves.

Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky's piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. Songs of Love was first published in 1904. No evidence survives of any public performance in Kashperova's lifetime although it is very likely that they were performed at her regular 'musical evenings at home on Tuesdays' mentioned in her Memoirs. The transparency of the piano writing strongly suggests that she would accompany herself singing. Kashperova, by all accounts, possessed a fine voice, and in the summer of 1906 she decided 'to learn from the artistry', as she put it, of the tenor Raimond von Zur-Mühlen who was widely celebrated for having developed (with Clara Schumann) the Lieder-Abend tradition. His summer-schools on the Baltic coast were frequented by aspiring singers from all over Europe, even Japan and India. Kashperova herself was responsible for the poetic lyrics of Songs of Love (in both Russian and German), which may well have emerged from her own bittersweet experience of life and love ; she was not to marry until 1916 at the age of forty-four. That Kashperova is the author of both the music and the lyrics of Songs of Love would suggest that they express very personal sentiments. Instrumentation : soprano (tenor) and piano

In fact, after being burned by the church, one of her relatives kept her belongings inside a wooden box... and in the twentieth century one of her grandchildren donated the box to "The Magic Square Museum" in London. Genius bought the hat at a public auction as an art relic to decorate one of his rooms. Could this weird neighbor be the reason of Socrates' psychological trauma ? Or maybe he is the one who will cure him ? And what has the hat to do with all this ?

New Order. Blue Monday
40 ans de house music à travers ce titre qui a déferlé sur tous les dance floor du monde, depuis mars 1983. Ce ne serait pas drôle si un de premiers titres dédié à la collection seveninches était tout, sauf un 45 Tours. En effet : Blue Monday est un maxi 45 tours (sa taille n'est donc pas de sept pouces, mais de douze...). Le format n'est pas anodin, car c'est un morceau fait pour les discothèques, avec une durée bien plus longue qu'un single (Blue Monday dure 7 : 31). Comment ce disque, réalisé par des musiciens orphelins de leur chanteur culte de leur précédent groupe (Joy Division), prolétaires du nord de l'Angleterre ont pu chavirer à ce point les clubs de New York, Ibiza, Berlin, etc. ? Il y a un avant Blue Monday et un après. C'est sur le label indépendant Factory, que le maxi est publié. L'histoire raconte (et c'est vrai ! ) que le graphiste, Peter Saville, a désiré une fabrication spéciale pour ce disque, qui représente la modernité en illustrant un floppy disc, avec des découpages dans le carton de la pochette... Le disque coûtait plus cher qu'il ne rapportait... C'était donc pour la gloire... Sauf que le label, ne le groupe n'avait prévu de vendre... plus d'un million d'exemplaires du Maxi 45 Tours... ce qui fait de ce Maxi 45 Tours la plus grosse vente de toute l'histoire de l'industrie musicale britannique (80. 000 ex en France ! ).
