Aspects of the syntax of educated Singaporean English
This work consists of a collection of eight papers on the syntax of English as spoken and written by educated Singaporeans. The topics dealt with include various aspects of verb-phrase structure and use, comparative constructions, and relative pronoun selection. Some of the papers are dialectological in focus and some theoretical, but all were researched through questionnaire-based interviews and/or examination of bodies of written material. Eleven Singapore researchers collaborated with the editor in this project.

Les Goolrick étaient des princes. Et tout le monde voulait leur ressembler. C'étaient les années 50, les femmes se faisaient des coiffures sophistiquées, elles portaient des robes de taffetas ou de soie, des gants et des chapeaux, et elles avaient de l'esprit. Les hommes préparaient des cocktails, des Gimlet, des Manhattan, des Gibson, des Singapore Ming, c'était la seule chose qu'ils prenaient au sérieux. Dans cette petite ville de Virginie, on avait vraiment de la classe, d'ailleurs on trouvait son style en lisant le New Yorker. Chez les Goolrick, il y avait trois enfants, tous brillants. Et une seule loi: on ne parle jamais à l'extérieur de ce qui se passe à la maison. À la maison, il y avait des secrets. Les Goolrick étaient féroces.

Living in Two Worlds
This is a study of Singapore pastors' worldview & understanding of the epidemiology, symptomatology and management of possession behaviour. The pastors' accounts are compared with those from the scientific disciplines, and convergences and divergences noted. Factors shaping both the pastors' and the scientific discourses are examined. The pastors are shown to respond to competing scientific paradigms by reinforcing their two-worlds worldview. They either live mainly in the other world, or in each world at a time, or between the two worlds. Based on theological reflection focusing on epistemology, theodicy & cosmology, the author shows that the paradigm of living in both worlds simultaneously is the most appropriate pastoral response. The theological vision of the coexisting worlds and the pastoral task of unmasking and resisting evil in all its varieties and depths are then discussed.

Bumboat
Pierre Vinclair vogue sur le cours d'eau Singapore River et remonte jusqu'à son embouchure, là où la cité s'est historiquement développée au 19e siècle. Au fil de ce voyage, il nous révèle l'histoire de Singapour et nous dévoile de nombreuses anecdotes culturelles et littéraires. - C'est là que vivaient les pirates avant l'arrivée de Thomas Stamford Raffles en 1819. Par la suite, les colons britanniques y établirent leur port. . La rivière servait de chenal, et les quais d'entrepôts pour les bateaux en réparation ou les marchandises. Après que le port, dont l'activité s'accroissait sans cesse, fut déplacé sur les côtes extérieures de l'île, la rivière devint une voie commerciale saturée de jonques et extrêmement polluée. Désormais seuls les " bumboat ", les bateaux touristiques continuent à naviguer sur ce cour d'eau.
