Le combat d'un homme face au racisme de l'Amérique des années 30. En 1933, Doug Wiston, véritable force de la nature et grand amateur de jazz, est un jeune travailleur noir dans une scierie de l'Etat de Louisiane. Exploité du fait de sa force herculéenne, il finit renvoyé pour avoir osé défendre son père, passé à tabac par Sanders, l'odieux patron raciste de l'établissement et membre du Ku Klux Klan. Sans travail, sans argent, prêt à tout pour venger l'honneur de son père, Doug se morfond dans un état de révolte : contre les injustices, contre Sanders, contre les Blancs. Il découvre ce sentiment étrange qu'est la haine...
