Le Centre national de la recherche scientifique est un établissement unique dont l'originalité surprend. Fruit d'une aspiration partagée par de nombreuses personnalités politiques et scientifiques, le CNRS a très tôt rassemblé hommes et femmes autour d'une même conviction, celle que l'humanité tirera profit d'une meilleure organisation de la recherche scientifique, et d'un même idéal, celui de la liberté. Depuis sa création en 1939, l'établissement s'est développé et profondément transformé. Biologie, chimie, écologie et environnement, homme et société, ingénierie et systèmes, mathématiques, nucléaire et particules, physique, sciences de l'information, Terre et Univers : dans tous ces domaines, le CNRS continue de puiser dans ses origines des réponses aux défis contemporains.
