Fritz Kahn. Infographics Pioneer
De nationalité allemande, Fritz Kahn (1888-1968) était médecin, pédagogue, auteur de vulgarisation scientifique et un pionnier de l'infographie. Chassé d'Allemagne par les Nazis, qui interdirent et brûlèrent ses livres, Kahn émigra en Palestine, puis en France, avant de s'installer aux Etats-Unis pour poursuivre l'oeuvre de sa vie. Dans cette édition révisée, TASCHEN célèbre le génie créatif de Kahn, particulièrement doué pour mettre en image des concepts scientifiques complexes. Des oeuvres comme Man as Industrial Palace montrent comment Kahn a déployé des métaphores visuelles percutantes pour démystifier la science et combien sa démarche a influencé des générations d'illustrateurs scientifiques, de spécialistes de la communication visuelle et d'infographistes jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Le livre présente plus de 350 illustrations accompagnées d'importantes légendes, trois textes originaux de Fritz Kahn, un avant-propos de Steven Heller et un essai sur la vie et l'oeuvre de Kahn.

PIONEERS OF REPRESENTATION THEORY: FROBENIUS, BURNSIDE, SCHUR, AND BRAUER
The year 1897 was marked by two important mathematical events: the publication of the first paper on representations of finite groups by Ferdinand Georg Frobenius ( 1849-1917) and the appearance of the first treatise in English on the theory of finite groups by William Burnside (1852-1927). Burnside soon developed his own approach to representations of finite groups. In the next few years, working independently, Frobenius and Burnside explored the new subject and its applications to finite group theory.
They were soon joined in this enterprise by Issai Schur (1875-194 1) and some years later, by Richard Brauer (1901-1977). These mathematicians' pioneering research is the subject of this book. It presents an account of the early history of representation theory through an analysis of the published work of the principals and others with whom the principals' work was interwoven. Also included are biographical sketches and enough mathematics to enable readers to follow the development of the subject. An introductory chapter contains some of the results involving characters of finite abelian groups by Lagrange, Gauss, and Dirichlet, which were part of the mathematical tradition from which Frobenius drew his inspiration.
This book presents the early history of an active branch of mathematics. It includes enough detail to enable readers to learn the mathematics along with the history. The volume would be a suitable text for a course on representations of finite groups, particularly one emphasizing an historical point of view.

En 1889, âgé de 23 ans, déjà auréolé d'une réputation de génie précoce, celui que des années plus tard Orwell nommera "le prophète de l'impérialisme britannique", Rudyard Kipling traverse les Etats-Unis. Il y passe quatre mois, et avec cette énergie qu'il avait déployée aux Indes en tant que jeune reporter et factotum du journal anglo-indien The Pioneer, il arpente le pays tout entier, visite San Francisco, pêche le saumon, côtoie cow-boys et industriels, traverse Yellowstone, visite les abattoirs de Chicago. Il envoie ses notes au Pioneer où elles seront publiées en bonne page avant d'être reprises dix ans plus tard en ouvrage. Traduit ici pour la première fois en français par Dominique Beugras.

Elle ressemblait à Pioneer, elle émettait comme elle et possédait extérieurement toutes ses caractéristiques, mais ça n'était pas elle. L'appareil, maintenant depuis plusieurs jours en orbite autour de notre satellite, faisait la une des journaux. Une panique contenue animait la planète, un émoi entre la frayeur et l'excitation. Dans les sphères de pouvoir, en revanche, c'était différent. Les décideurs de tous les pays connaissaient à présent le détail des faits et d'une manière ou d'une autre, ils préparaient la guerre.
