Does Yellow Run Forever?
Paul Graham fait-il courir jaune pour toujours ? comprend une série de photographies abordant la question éphémère de ce que nous recherchons et apprécions dans la vie - amour, richesse, beauté, réalité aux yeux clairs ou un monde de rêve intérieur ? L'oeuvre se faufile dans et hors de trois groupes d'images : des photographies d'arcs-en-ciel de l'ouest de l'Irlande, d'un rêveur endormi et de magasins d'or aux Etats-Unis. L'imagerie nous conduit de la réalité au rêve et à l'illusion, entre faits et phénomènes spectraux, entrelacés les uns dans les autres. Est-ce que Yellow Run Forever ? refuse de réduire le monde à un schéma connaissable, mais embrasse plutôt le puzzle - qu'il n'y a pas de significations singulières, de réponses directes ou d'or en attente au bout de l'arc-en-ciel. Pourtant, il y a des visions surprenantes dans le quotidien, qu'elles soient "belles" ou "laides" , qu'il y ait des rêves qui valent la peine d'être rêvés, des scènes magiques à voir et de vrais moments d'émerveillement à trouver en frissonnant le miroir de la vie.

The Book of Palms. The complete plates, Edition français-anglais-allemand
Le 15 décembre 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794-1868), professeur de botanique à l'Université de Munich et directeur du Jardin Botanique Royal, est conduit à sa sépulture dans un cercueil recouvert de feuilles de palmier fraîchement cueillies, hommage à sa révolutionnaire Histoire naturelle des palmiers : une oeuvre en trois volumes, publiée entre 1823 et 1853. Ce trésor encyclopédique de 240 sublimes illustrations chromolithographiques est le fruit de l'expédition de Martius au Brésil et au Pérou. De 1817 à 1820, il a parcouru plus de 2. 250 km à travers le bassin de l'Amazone pour étudier l'histoire naturelle et les tribus amérindiennes avec le zoologue Johann Baptist von Spix. De cette expédition est né ce catalogue hors pair réunissant toutes les espèces connues de la famille du palmier, qui établit la classification moderne de cet arbre, décrit toutes ses espèces au Brésil et propose les premières cartes biogéographiques des palmiers. L'in-folio de Martius est insolite en ceci qu'il inclut des schémas transversaux révélant la structure interne de ces arbres majestueux que les citoyens d'Europe centrale auraient autrement eu du mal à imaginer avec précision. Tout aussi remarquables, les paysages en couleur présentent diverses espèces de palmiers d'une beauté simple et élégante.

Joost Swarte contribue au légendaire magazine The New Yorker depuis 1994. Ce livre présente plus de 450 dessins réalisés pour l'hebdomadaire pendant ces vingt ans : croquis, illustrations de toutes tailles, et bien sûr, toutes les couvertures exécutées par le maître néerlandais. Bourdichon's Boston Hours
This absorbing book explores the crown jewel of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's collection of rare books and manuscripts : Jean Bourdichon's Boston Hours. As court artist to King François I of France, Bourdichon produced paintings, books and even parade floats for the sovereign and his entourage. This publication accompanies the museum's first ever exhibition dedicated to this spectacular illuminated manuscript. Painter to two kings, Jean Bourdichon remains today one of the most celebrated artists of the French Renaissance. Leading scholars Nicholas Herman and Anne-Marie Eze explore its history in depth, shedding new light on the book's patronage and provenance- from the shelves of a wealthy Catholic landowner in Lincolnshire to the shop of a Venetian art and antiques dealer. This book is the latest in the Gardner's Close Up series, each installment focusing on an individual, outstanding work of art in the collection. Jared Bark Book of Stacks Stack of Books /franCais/anglais
En 2012, l'artiste américain Jared Bark, s'est mis à empiler des livres dans les champs et les bois autour de sa ferme. Il avait cette image en tête d'une colonne de livres dressée au bord d'un champ entouré d'arbres. Après avoir travaillé sur les piles en extérieur, Jared Bark a déplacé le projet dans son atelier, où il a fabriqué toutes sortes de piles de livres : des colorées, des brulées, des effacées...Plus récemment, Bark a construit des piles verticales de livres qui sont ensuite passées dans une scierie pour devenir une "cant", terme désignant une bûche qui a été fraisée sur les quatre côtés. La verticalité élancée de ces sculptures fait référence à la fois aux arbres dont on fait le papier et aux anciennes colonnes autoportantes que Bark a découvertes à Pompéi. Book of Stacks, Stacks of Books rassemble pour la première fois dans un livre une sélection complète des piles que Bark a réalisées au cours de la dernière décennie.

During Antiquity, every culture had its own strange creatures, that mixed the forms of one or more animal, plant and human species in an infinite number of more-or-less fanciful combinations. Griffins, sphinxes, mermaids, centaurs, satyrs, pygmies, werewolves, winged monsters and unspeakable hybrids, fantastic beasts abound in the imagination of many populations throughout Antiquity. Most of them continue to live, sometimes transformed, through fairy tales, literature, movies and videogames. Faced with the abundance and variety of the ancient fantastic bestiary, the questions that come to mind are : Where do fantastic beasts come from ? How do they appear in different cultures ? What is their history, how did they survive until now ? And above all, what are fantastic beasts ? This book will explore these questions through the lens of archaeology, art history, philology and philosophy. Burmese Silver from the Colonial Period
This stunning catalogue presents an exceptional collection of rare Burmese silver. Accompanied by detailed photographs and explanatory texts, this ground-breaking book proposes a new way of looking at Burmese silver. Names, dates, places, and stories - identifying the who, when, where, and what of Burmese silver has been the focus of publications on the topic. Are these questions the best way to understand silver, however ? Alexandra Green argues that they are not. Too few pieces provide reliable information about silversmiths, production locations, and dates to allow for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Instead, a close examination of silver patterns reveals strong links with Burmese art history reaching as far back as the Bagan period (11th to 13th centuries), connections with contemporary artistic trends, and participation within the wider world of silversmithing. The first European to write about Burmese silver was H L Tilly, a colonial official from the late 19th into the early 20th century. Tasked with collecting objects for various fairs and exhibitions, he took an interest in Burmese art, publishing articles and books from the 1880s onwards. While much of what he wrote was factually inaccurate and coloured by the prejudices and stereotypes common at the time, his two volumes on Burmese silver published in 1902 and 1904 contain pictures of pieces from the early to mid 19th century. These enable a reconstruction of how silver designs evolved as the country was absorbed into the Indian Raj, and British and other Westerners became consumers of local silver products. Tilly was also correct in his interest in silver designs. Green uses the visual information from his books to describe the continuities and innovations of designs found on silver from the mid 19th through the mid 20th century, and she places these trends within local, regional, and global flows of ideas. Many studies of Burmese silver have been plagued by a lack of understanding of the Burmese context. In contrast, Green examines silver from a local perspective, drawing on Burmese texts and information that allows for a nuanced view of the motifs, designs, and patterns that appear repetitively on silver pieces. Using Graham Honeybill's collection, formed over many years, as a basis, she explores how designs and patterns circulated around the country and were innovatively combined and recombined on pieces by silversmiths producing objects for Burmese, Western, and commercial clients.

This book examines the early work of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), writer, journalist and woman of letters. She became famous in the 1830s with her Illustrations of Political Economy, a series of 25 short novels popularizing the basic principles of Political Economy. Also discussed are her two shorter series of tales from that period, Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated and Illustrations of Taxation. With these works Martineau took part in an intense debate about the role of economic theory in English society. Drawing on such authorities as Adam Smith Martineau offered her readers the possibility of understanding the impact of the Industrial Revolution and its concomitant changes.

Beginning in the 1990s large numbers of women from Mainland China and Southeast Asia married men in Taiwan. They now number over 400,000, warranting some to call them "Taiwan's Fifth Ethnic Group". This book argues that the rise of these marriages is a gendered and relational phenomenon, linked to the forces of globalization. Traditional ideas of marriage, such as the belief that a woman "marries out" of her natal family to be dependent upon her husband and his family, and the idea that a man should "marry down" to a woman of a lesser social and economic status, have not kept pace with changes in women's educational and career opportunities. The complete edition gives access to the longest and most important work from Aristotle's zoology, De historia animalium, in the Latin translation by William of Moerbeke. This version was part of the standard university curriculum in the late-medieval West. The bilingual indices give access to the richness of the translator's vocabulary and provide an indispensable tool for the study of his translation method. Except for De partibus animalium, all of Moerbeke's translations from the Aristotelian zoological corpus are now available in critical editions.

Activation Policies for the Unemployed, the Right to Work and the Duty to Work
Since the 1990s and the 2000s, Western social protection systems have experienced a turn towards activation. This turn consists of the multiplication of measures aimed at bringing those who are unemployed closer to participation in the labour market. These measures often induce a strengthening of the conditions that must be met in order to receive social benefits. It is in this well known context that the authors gathered in this book decided to take a closer look at the relationship between activation policies for the unemployed and the right and the duty to work. If activation measures are likely to increase transitions towards the labour market, we can also make the assumption that they may, particularly when they are marked with the seal of coercion, hinder or dramatically reduce the right to freely chosen work. In such circumstances, the realisation of the "right to work", which is often stated to be the aim of those who promote activation, tends in practice to be reduced to an increasing pressure being exerted on the unemployed. In this case, isn't it actually the duty to work that is particularly reinforced ? After an historical and philosophical perspective on the issue, this assumption is confronted with the developments observed in the United States and in France, and then with the guidelines laid down in international human rights instruments. What follows is a discussion of two alternatives to the dominant activation model : the basic income guarantee and the employment guarantee.

"Messieurs" , commencerait la missive de notre correspondante imaginaire. "Le problème n'est pas que je n'apprécie pas l'édition originale du Big Penis Book, mais plutôt que je l'apprécie trop. Je suis de plus en plus angoissée à l'idée de sortir de chez moi sans lui et les longs voyages d'affaire sont devenus une vraie torture. Vous ne pourriez pas publier une édition plus discrète, moins volumineuse, qui regorgerait toujours d'hommes dont les membres virils dépassent les 20 centimètres, mais sans former une bosse disgracieuse dans mon bagage à main ? Et tant que vous y êtes, vous pourriez aussi rétrécir son prix ? Mes poches sont aussi plates que cette requête". C'est fait ! Le Big Penis Book dévoile les impressionnants membres virils de quelque 150 modèles, immortalisés entre les années 1940 et 1990 par Bob Mizer pour AMG, David Hurles pour Old Reliable, Rip Colt du Studio Colt, Craig Calvin Anderson de Sierra Domino, Hal Roth de Filmco, Jim Jaeger des studios Third World, les studios Falcon, Mike Arlen, Fred Bisonnes, Carlos Quiroz, ou Charles Hovland, dans un format réduit à petit prix. Les photos ne proviennent pas seulement de l'édition originale en 384 pages, mais aussi des Calendriers Big Penis publiés ultérieurement, si bien que 30% de son contenu est inédit. Les textes aussi ont été raccourcis pour laisser davantage de place aux étonnantes photos en couleur ou noir et blanc... Qui, gros, petit ou dans la moyenne, pourrait demander meilleure affaire ?
