Foreign Devils investigates representations of exile in Hollywood cinema from 1930 to 1956 through the films of Peter Lorre, Béla Lugosi, and Conrad Veidt. This book dispels the assumption that by virtue of its hegemonic, reactionary, and exclusionary modes of representation, otherness is excluded from or only obliquely alluded to in classical Hollywood cinema. This book contends that Hollywood uses European émigré actors to speak of the experience of exile and the often-futile exilic attempts at integration into the host nation. This original, cross-disciplinary study incorporates a number of research interests in film studies – specifically Hollywood cinema, exile and émigré filmmakers, the Golden Age of the studio system, the Universal Horror cycle, and Poverty Row filmmaking. Foreign Devils combines the close reading of key texts with a theoretical framework that encompasses body theory and theories of space and nation with historical accounts of immigration to the United States and American concepts of nationhood through the symbolism of blood and death studies. Film studies students and academics, both undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as scholars in other disciplines, and anyone with an interest in Hollywood cinema, Central European culture in the 1930s-1950s, and European emigration to the United States will benefit from reading this book. De 1998 à 2005, Neil Drabble a photographié un adolescent américain, Roy, alors qu'il grandissait de l'adolescence à l'âge adulte. A un certain niveau, ce vaste travail peut être considéré comme un document fascinant d'une transition toujours convaincante. Un examen plus approfondi révèle d'autres nuances ; une collaboration, un partenariat, un portrait personnel et en même temps une image universelle de l'adolescence. Drabble a choisi de ne pas représenter les événements significatifs qui pourraient apparaître dans un album de famille ni les moments définitifs associés à la photographie documentaire. Au lieu de cela, ces photographies se concentrent sur les périodes apathiques et hors scène, les "moments intermédiaires" de la vie quotidienne. Cette focalisation sur les passages marginaux du temps ignoré situe le spectateur au coeur de l'adolescence, définie comme la période entre l'enfance et l'âge adulte, suspendue entre le désir (pour la promesse différée de l'âge adulte) et le regret (pour la perte de l'enfance comme refuge). En photographiant la même personne à plusieurs reprises et intimement au cours de leurs années de formation, un sens de la mise en miroir a commencé à émerger, réveillant quelque chose du soi adolescent de l'artiste, brouillant la frontière entre portrait et autoportrait. Neil Drabble a grandi dans un Manchester gris des années 1970, en regardant des émissions de télévision américaines et en rêvant d'un glamour perçu d'une adolescence vécu dans des endroits où les adolescents mangeaient de la pizza, buvaient le Dr Pepper, discutaient au téléphone avec des amis jusqu'à tard et conduisaient des voitures plutôt que en attente aux arrêts de bus pluvieux. Le processus de représentation de Roy et la collaboration entre le photographe plus âgé et le sujet plus jeune ont permis à Drabble de recadrer d'une certaine manière ses propres années d'adolescence et de s'engager par procuration avec des aspects d'une jeunesse américaine alternative qu'il avait convoitée outre-Atlantique.

Günter Wagner, born 5 July 1928 in Jüterborg, Germany, studied theology in Hamburg and in Zurich, where he received a doctoral degree in 1960. From 1956 till 1958 he was employed as research assistant and representative of the German Free Churches at the Ecumenical Centre of the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Christlicher Kirchen" in Frankfurt. In 1958 he was appointed as instructor for New Testament Studies at the Baptist Theological Seminary, Rüschlikon, continuing as associate professor (1961), and professor of New Testament Studies (1965) for 35 years until his retirement in 1993. Günter Wagner is a member of numerous ecumenical committees and societies for biblical studies, and has taught as visiting professor and lecturer in Europe, America, and Africa. He is editor of "Exegetical Bibliographies" and co-editor of the book series "Die Kirchen der Welt" and the ecumenical journal Una Sancta ; he served on the editorial board of the exegetical journal "New Testament Studies". His publications of articles in biblical and exegetical journals and particularly his book on "Pauline Baptism and Pagan Mysteries" have established his scholarly reputation worldwide.

Octobre 1989, Julien Navarre a 22 Ans. Appelé sous les drapeaux à rejoindre les rangs du Service National Obligatoire, il tente une réforme directe et maladroite à l'appel des "trois jours" , qui se traduit par une incorporation en camp semi-disciplinaire dans les forêts lugubres de Bitche. Artiste et écrivain, il décide de rédiger un rapport quotidien quasi journalistique pour dénoncer les rouages de la manipulation à laquelle se livre la hiérarchie militaire pour amener les appelés à devenir de bons soldats. Seul contre tous, il perd peu à peu son âme et ses convictions, et se retrouve piégé à son propre jeu. Il devient à l'image de ceux qu'il execre et finit par se détester lui-même. Des évènements majeurs vont le conduire dans des abîmes dont il doit sortir, coûte que coûte, pour recouvrer sa liberté... Pamphlet social et antimilitariste, cette expérience en immersion totale propose une photographe précise et marginale du Service National Obligatoire, imposé avant 1992.

Hilma af Klint. The Five Notebook 1
In 1896, Hilma af Klint and four other like-minded women artists left the Edelweiss Society and founded the "Friday Group", also known as "The Five". They met every Friday for spiritual meetings, including prayers, studies of the New Testament, meditation and séances. The medium exercised automatic writing and mediumistic drawing. Eventually they established contact with spiritual beings whom they called "The High Ones". In 1896, the five women began taking meticulous notes of the mediumistic messages conveyed by the spirits. In time, Hilma af Klint felt she had been selected for more important messages. After ten years of esoteric training with "The Five", aged 43, Hilma af Klint accepted a major assignment, the execution of The Paintings for the Temple. This commission, which engaged the artist from 1906 to 1915, changed the course of her life. In 1908, Rudolf Steiner, leader of the German Theosophical Society, held several lectures in Stockholm. He also visited af Klint's studio and saw some of the early Paintings for the Temple. In 1913, Steiner founded the Anthroposophical Society, which af Klint joined in 1920 and remained a member for the rest of her life.

Betty Boom
Drucilla Drevermann, la trentaine, est une jeune professeure de lettres épanouie, heureuse dans son métier comme dans sa vie personnelle. Mais Drucilla est surtout très amoureuse de Scrogneugneu, son petit-ami, doté d'un charme fou et d'une voix hypnotique. Mais sous les traits de cet homme enjôleur et apparemment gentil, se cache un monstre de violence et de cruauté. Le récit, ou plutôt le rözzle (roman-puzzle, mais ne vous inquiétez pas, une définition est fournie dans l'avant-propos), se déploie sous les yeux du lecteur comme on se souvient, par flashes, des moments doux comme des moments les plus cruels. Chaque chapitre du récit, défini par un #, est interchangeable : oui, vous avez bien lu, Betty Boom se lit dans tous les sens, comme on scrolle sur un réseau social et ce Boom qui explose à la face du roman et du lecteur, devient peu à peu le bruit de la colère et de l'insoumission. Les deux voix s'entremêlent, celles de la victime et de son bourreau, mais par la force du mot et une esthétique coup de poing, au langage parfois énigmatique, Betty Boom se mue peu à peu en héroïne badass des temps modernes, devenant un modèle de combativité. Pour que chaque femme, soumise ou réduite au silence, se reconnaisse en Betty boom, se lève et dise, en signe de protestation et de ralliement : #BB.

Concepts of Mass in Contemporary Physics and Philosophy
The concept of mass is one of the most fundamental notions in physics, comparable in importance only to those of space and time. But in contrast to the latter, which are the subject of innumerable physical and philosophical studies, the concept of mass has been but rarely investigated. Here Max Jammer, a leading philosopher and historian of physics, provides a concise but comprehensive, coherent, and self-contained study of the concept of mass as it is defined, interpreted, and applied in contemporary physics and as it is critically examined in the modern philosophy of science. With its focus on theories proposed after the mid-1950s, the book is the first of its kind, covering the most recent experimental and theoretical investigations into the nature of mass and its role in modern physics, from the realm of elementary particles to the cosmology of galaxies.
The book begins with an analysis of the persistent difficulties of defining inertial mass in a noncircular manner and discusses the related question of whether mass is an observational or a theoretical concept. It then studies the notion of mass in special relativity and the delicate problem of whether the relativistic rest mass is the only legitimate notion of mass and whether it is identical with the classical (Newtonian) mass. This is followed by a critical analysis of the different derivations of the famous mass-energy relationship E = mc2 and its conflicting interpretations. Jammer then devotes a chapter to the distinction between inertial and gravitational mass and to the various versions of the so-called equivalence principle with which Newton initiated his Principia but which also became the starting point of Einstein's general relativity, which supersedes Newtonian physics. The book concludes with a presentation of recently proposed global and local dynamical theories of the origin and nature of mass.

Jorge Semprún is a leading writer from the first generation of Spanish Civil War exiles, yet studies of his work have often focused solely on his literary testimony to the concentration camps and his political activities. Although Semprún's work derives from his incarceration in Buchenwald and his expulsion from the Spanish Communist Party in 1964, limiting the discussion of his works to the autobiographical details or to the realm of Holocaust studies is reductive. The responses by many influential writers to his recent death highlight that the significance of Semprún's work goes beyond the testimony of historical events. His self-identification as a Spanish exile has often been neglected and there is no comprehensive study of his works available in English. This book provides a global view of his oeuvre and extends literary analysis to texts that have received little critical attention. The author investigates the role played by memory in some of Semprún's works, drawing on current debates in the field of memory studies. A detailed analysis of these works allows related concepts, such as exile and nostalgia, the Holocaust, the interplay between memory and writing, politics and collective memory, and postmemory and identity, to be examined and discussed.

Marsilio Ficino in Germany from Renaissance to Enlightenment. A Reception History
The philosopher and humanist Marsilio Ficino (1433–1499) has attracted scholarly attention as translator of Plato, the Corpus Hermeticum, Plotinus and other Neoplatonists, and for his complex synthesis of Platonism and Christianity. While most previous studies of Ficino's reception have focussed on Italy, France, England and Spain, this book presents a comprehensive study of his reception in Germany and neighbouring areas, examining how Northern writers between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries remembered and reinvented Ficino's person and work. Focused chapters examine the ways German authors adapted his theories of the Ancient Theology, melancholia, celestial influence and poetic inspiration, and used his writings in related fields such as alchemy and witchcraft. It also studies those who rejected Ficino's work, providing context for those who embraced his ideas. The most comprehensive bibliography of printed editions of Ficino's work since Kristeller forms the basis for a bibliometric analysis.

Islam in the West
This book studies the historical, religious and political concerns of the Iraqi Shi‘i community as interpreted by the members of that community who now live in the United Kingdom and Ireland, following the 2003-2010 war and occupation in Iraq. It opens up a creative space to explore dialogue between Islam and the West, looking at issues such as intra-Muslim conflict, Muslim-Christian relations, the changing face of Arab Islam and the experience of Iraq in the crossfire of violence and terrorism – all themes which are currently emerging in preaching and in discussion among Iraqi Shi‘a in exile. The book's aim is to explore possibilities for dialogue with Iraqi Shi‘i communities who wish, in the midst of political, social and religious transition, to engage with elements of Christian theology such as pastoral and liberation theology.

Lydia, lying between the Aegean coast and the Anatolian plateau, has been associated since Antiquity with the Pactolus river, which carried gold from the Tmolus mountain, and with the wealth of Croesus. Populated by Lydians and Maeonians, and marked by the presence of Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, it has attracted the attention of researchers since the end of the 18th century. This book aims to cover the chronology of Lydian studies from the protohistoric period to the beginning of the Byzantine period and to bring together the contributions of international researchers and scholars from a wide range of disciplines that includes history, archeology, epigraphy, and numismatics, and from different perspectives. The various studies discuss society, social structures, military aspects, economy, religion, arts, architecture, and material culture. This diachronic approach makes it possible in particular to question continuity and discontinuity between the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, as well as with those that preceded them.
