Infidels, Turks, and Women: The South Slavs in the German Mind, ca. 1400-1600
This study examines the way in which late medieval and early modern Germans envisioned the Balkan Slavic peoples. It deals with mental categories, such as images, perceptions, and attitudes, which the German-speaking subjects of the Holy Empire gradually developed during their increasingly frequent contacts with the Balkans in the period between 1400 and 1600. During that time span the Germans were constructing their own type of negative self-identification that served as a grid through which information about other peoples was processed. The closer definition of that grid and the types of images and attitudes produced by the encounter and bequeathed to modern Germans and, indeed, to the rest of Western Europe is one of the main goals of the book.

Violences et non-violences en Inde : Violences and non-violences in India
Comment comprendre que des ascètes aient développé en Inde une tradition martiale extrêmement élaborée, tout en ayant fait des vœux stricts de " non-violence " ? Et comment se fait-il que des leaders syndicalistes à poigne puissent se réclamer avec conviction des mêmes idéaux que Gandhi, ou encore que des brahmanes hésitent aussi peu à manier le bâton tout en affichant haut et fort leur foi dans la non-violence ? De telles façons d'agir, souvent paradoxales à nos yeux, sont susceptibles cependant de renouveler notre compréhension des notions de violence et de non-violence dans la société indienne, contredisant en particulier l'idée que l'on s'en fait habituellement depuis le gandhisme.
Douze études, portant sur des périodes, des lieux, des protagonistes fort divers, montrent que, bien souvent, la non-violence est ce au nom de quoi la violence se légitime, ce qui lui confère du sens. Mais la valorisation de " la " non-violence repose sur des interprétations en réalité très variées de cette expression, et sur des rapports de force qui relativisent et hiérarchisent des points de vue distincts, tout en permettant leur maintien.

De Romain Gary, la vie et l'œuvre sont connues: ses pseudonymes, sa gueule de faux dur, son mariage glamour avec une star... Ce qu'on sait moins, c'est sa part d'ombre, son incapacité à rejoindre le monde des vivants après son séjour dans l'armée des ombres, la fragilité du barrage qu'il édifia contre une mère abusive, de Vilnius à Moscou et a Nice. Cet essai tente de découvrir le réseau des épreuves qui poussèrent un romancier à succès, un amant de la vie à inventer Ajar, puis a se suicider. Champion des enchanteurs, des escrocs, des saltimbanques, Gary fut à l'avance l'adversaire des donneurs de leçons et des spécialistes du chantage aux grands sentiments. Irréductible inassignable, sortant toujours du cadre romancier.

Michel Leiris aura au moins laissé une oeuvre inachevée : la biographie que, depuis la mort de Raymond Roussel, il avait envisagé de consacrer au " plus grand magnétiseur des temps modernes " (André Breton) dont le timbre de la voix (dans son enfance) puis le style d'écriture (plus tard) l'avaient littéralement fasciné. Dans une lettre à André Schaeffner du 8 mars 1935, le ton est donné, le programme en quelque sorte fixé ; il projette de mener cette enquête en parallèle à celle qu'il entend conduire sur lui-même, escomptant peut-être un effet de miroir : " Quant à moi, note-t-il, je prépare un travail sur Raymond Roussel et ai repris, en l'amplifiant beaucoup, un ancien essai autobiographique " (qui deviendra L'Age d'homme).
De ce souci, mais aussi de cet échec, témoigne le Cahier Roussel retrouvé dans les papiers de Leiris par Jean Jamin qui en a établi le texte publié ici pour la première fois. Commencé probablement à son retour de la mission Dakar-Djibouti et poursuivi sa vie durant, ce cahier contient bien sûr la matière de ses différents écrits sur Roussel mais surtout ce qu'il n'a pas voulu transmettre ou n'a pas su dire autrement que dans ces notes. Et particulièrement un ensemble de considérations sur les Nouvelles Impressions d'Afrique révélant combien la radicalité de la démarche de Roussel aura hanté Leiris, bien au-delà du langage.
Du coup, c'est l'oeuvre et même la vie de Leiris qui demandent à être reconsidérées à cette lumière, comme le montre Annie Le Brun dans la présentation et les annotations à ce volume, rassemblant non seulement la totalité des textes sur Roussel (articles, notes ou extraits d'ouvrage) publiés de son vivant par Leiris mais encore la correspondance, en partie inédite, que l'un et l'autre ont échangée entre 1915 et 1933.

La tyrannie consiste, pour la plupart de nos contemporains, en l'exercice abusif du pouvoir par l'Etat. On n'envisage pas de parler de "tyrannie" s'agissant de rapports entre individus ou entre personnes morales. Ce livre dévoile les mécanismes de cette dérive et montre qu'une autre voie a toujours existé : il ne tient qu'à la volonté politique de la rendre possible. Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radio broadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. Suite No. 1 is an interesting hybrid that conveys the most modern compositional structure in the genre of light music. Schmid composed it shortly after the end of his year as a master student of Schönberg in Berlin. Like his other works of the time, its unusual instrumentation already shows an effort to move on from classical "high forms" and compose in looser structures, with the free use of the twelve-tone technique providing inner coherence. "Dance", "Waltz", "March" are linked by two inserted "Intermezzi" and introduced by an "Introduction". Not all movements require full instrumentation and are designed for solo rather than group performance. Professional playing techniques such as flutter tonguing and alienating sound effects through damping and muting are used. Instrumentation : wind band and percussion op. 7

Morality and Politics in Nigeria
Before the Nigerian civil war, and even after the war till 1982, Nigeria was regarded as a wealthy nation in comparison with other African countries. However, for the past 30 years, struggle for power has resulted in political instability, moral degeneracy and under-development. The economy of the country has collapsed and millions of Nigerians are now enveloped in poverty, hunger, disease, ignorance, unemployment etc. The root cause of this unhealthy situation for the country is corruption and moral degradation. The only way out of the Nigerian ugly situation seems to be the integration of morality in Nigerian politics. This research work therefore aims at suggesting avenues of restoring man's original dignity within a corrupt and unjust social and political setting in Nigeria.

There is currently no generally accepted theory of metre in French poetry. The aim of this book is to propose one which will be practically useful to readers and analysts of French verse. This theory relates metre to the accentual structure of different registers of spoken and written Modern French. Cross and Crown in Barbados
During the late 19th century, Caribbean society was generally controlled by the local plantocracy and the colonial administration of the Europeans. Barbados was so much the pride of the British colonies in the Caribbean that it was called "Little England". The life-blood of the society, the Black labouring classes, reaped very little of the social and economic benefits from the Sugar industry which the White planter-class owned and controlled. The Church was also controlled by the planter-class, and it functioned effectively to sustain a pattern of rigid social containment, and to work consistently for the maintenance of the status quo. Political religion in Barbados was therefore an engine of social control of the poor Blacks by the rich Whites. Cross and Crown together created "peace" and poverty.

Focusing in English and Korean
English and Korean have various ways of expressing grammatical prominence. While focusing in English has been studied over the past twenty years by a number of generative and functional grammarians, there is as yet no comprehensive treatment of focus phenomena in Korean. This monograph treats five focusing constructions of English and looks at their grammatical and lexical equivalents in Korean. English and Korean are different typologically. Since this difference is important, if one wishes to make sense of the diverging focusing strategies in these two languages, it is necessary to give a typological outline of English and Korean. The follwing two typological approaches figure prominently in this monograph : the basic word order typology developed by Greenberg, and the language typology proposed by Li and Thompson.

Scripture and Midrash in Judaism
The rabbis of late antiquity produced a score of exegesis of the Hebrew Scriptures of Ancient Israel ("the Old Testament"), in which they took various approaches to the study and interpretation of what they called "the written Torah". These exegesis, called collectively "Midrash", form an important part of "the oral Torah", that is, the tradition of Sinai formulated and transmitted for memorization and ultimately written down by the ancient sages in the first six centuries A.D. These three volumes present large selections of the Midrash-documents of ancient Judaism, in the translation of Jacob Neusner, who has now translated into English nearly all of the Rabbinic literature of late antiquity. The selections are organized by type, so that readers see the various ways in which, in form and in intellectual program, the documents of Midrash-compilation were formulated and set forth. In this way, the vast body of biblical exegesis put forth by Judaism in its formative age is made available to the contemporary reader.

Agricultural Price Policy and Export and Food Production in Cameroon
This volume discusses the issue of agricultural price policy for the coffee-based farming systems in Cameroon. It presents a farming systems based analysis of the impact of different agricultural policies on food and export crop production in small mixed farming systems. The analysis shows what impact price policy and changing price relationships have on the production of coffee as well as food crops. The two major coffee-based production systems in Cameroon are modeled in a linear programming framework and the reaction of the farmers to varying price relations, institutional settings and technology changes are analyzed.
