The Undergrowth of Science. Delusion, self-deception and human frailty
Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Unreason and credulity supervene, illusory phenomena are described and measured, and theories are developed to explain them - until suddenly, often for no single reason, the bubble bursts, leaving behind it a residue of acrimony, recrimination, embarrassment and ruined reputations.
Here, then, are radiations, measured with high precision yet existing only in the minds of those who observed them; the Russian water, which some thought might congeal the oceans: phantom diseases which called for heroic surgery; monkey testis implants that restored the sexual powers of ageing roués and of tired sheep; truths about genetics and about the nature of matter, perceptible only to Aryan scientists in the Third Reich or Marxist ideologues in the Soviet Union; and much more. The Undergrowth of Science explores, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the history of such episodes, up to our own time, in ail their absurdity, tragedy and pathos.

Les trois morts de Georges Politzer
Dès l'âge de neuf ans, après la mort de ses parents Georges et Maï Politzer, Michel Politzer a vu s'effacer la mémoire de son enfance. Qui furent ses parents ? Comment György, ce lycéen révolté qui participe à 16 ans le fusil à la main à la révolution des Conseils hongrois de 1919, devient-il Georges, un brillant agrégé de philosophie propulsé au centre de la vie intellectuelle parisienne ? Comment cet admirateur de Descartes rencontre-t-il ensuite sa future épouse, Maï, qui vénère Pascal, dans un train du pays basque ? Quelle fut la vie de ces deux militants communistes et résistants, dévorée par l'étude, l'action et la rédaction d'une oeuvre philosophique singulière ? Une vie qui valut à Georges de tomber sous les balles nazies en 1942, et à Maï de ne jamais revenir du camp d'Auschwitz. Grâce à quelques photos et à de rares témoignages qui lui ont permis de retrouver une partie de sa famille restée dans l'ombre, après un voyage dans la Hongrie natale de Georges, Michel Politzer recompose le portrait de ses parents, héros d'une génération d'intellectuels engagés. Son récit des origines est le fruit d'une bouleversante enquête.

Politzer contre le nazisme... Textes clandestins
Textes clandestins présentés par Roger Bourderon. Avant-propos de Claude Mazauric. Ces textes sont : "L'Obscuantisme au XXe siècle" et "Révolution et contre-révolution au XXe siècle" (Réponse à "Or et Sang" de M. Rosenberg). 28 novembre 1940 : l'idéologue nazi Alfred Rosenberg prononce une conférence à la Chambre des députés, devant le tout-Paris de la collaboration. Février 1941 : deux textes sont publiés et distribués clandestinement par le Parti communiste français. Ces textes, au style incisif et à l'ironie mordante, opposent à l'irrationalisme et à l'obscurantisme de Rosenberg une profession de foi rationaliste qui puise sa force dans les traditions françaises de Descartes aux Lumières. Ils constituent la seule réfutation philosophique, idéologique et politique du moment aux thèses racistes de l'occupant nazi.

Style and Rhetoric in Bertrand Russels's Work
A thorough examination of Bertrand Russell's language is the object of this study. Since this is the first major analysis of his writing style, examples taken from a wide spectrum of his writings are examined. Structurally the investigation begins by treating individual vocabulary and then moves on to larger structural units, covering such areas as figurative language and description. The final chapter deals with his rhetoric, discussing his methods of persuasion and the logic of his arguments. This careful analysis of his writings is significant in that it sheds new light on interesting aspects of Russell's character.

The present survey of the critique of mathematical logic in Germany at the turn of the 20th century attempts to answer several interesting questions : How did the contemporary German philosophers see the role and significance of logic ? What kind of relationships did they claim to exist between logic, mathematics, linguistics and psychology ? Pulkkinen starts by giving a historical survey of the development of German logic 1830-1920 as it appears against the background of German academic philosophy. Next he studies the interrelationships between logic and psychology, logic and linguistics, and logic and mathematics. After this the author presents the general features of the reception of mathematical logic in Germany between 1880 and 1920. This is followed by a more detailed account of the arguments of three individual critics : Fritz Mauthner, Heinrich Rickert, and Theodor Ziehen.

The Americans I Met est un projet combinant photographie et histoire orale. Il rassemble des portraits et des conversations réalisés au fil de rencontres que le photographe Viktor Hübner a vécues lors d'une série de voyages en auto-stop à travers les Etats-Unis. Avec seulement son appareil photo, un enregistreur audio et quelques provisions, il a parcouru 41 Etats et plus de 25 000 km de 2017 à 2019. Tout au long de ses voyages, Viktor Hübner a privilégié les rencontres fortuites et s'est appuyé quotidiennement sur l'hospitalité des personnes qu'il a croisées. Voyageur étranger, il est devenu le témoin oculaire de la vie pratique et spirituelle de nombreux Américains, et le porteur de nombreuses confidences. Ce livre se concentre sur les personnes que Viktor a rencontrées lors de ses voyages, leurs paroles, leurs expériences et, par extension, l'ère Trump dans laquelle elles ont vécu. The Americans I Met, de Viktor Hübner. Le titre est peut-être trop modeste pour l'ampleur du projet et l'ambition qui le sous-tend. Hübner a absorbé et actualisé stylistiquement le travail de photographe comme Stephen Shore, Mitch Epstein, Walker Evans et même Robert Franck, ou de confrères allemands comme Thomas Struth, qui s'est rendu au Yosemite et à El Capitan pour nous montrer la file de voitures garées et de touristes prêts à "cliquer". Mais Hübner a également utilisé les codes de l'art conceptuel et de la performance. Il a établi des règles, mis en place un système, l'a laissé fonctionner et est allé là où le processus l'a mené. Pas de voitures de location, pas d'hôtels, pas de transports publics, pas de réservations sur Internet, pas de relations sexuelles avec les personnes qu'il a rencontrées, juste assez d'argent pour la nourriture et les films et être ouvert à ce que les gens rencontrés avaient à lui dire. Cela semblait risqué, 16 000 miles parcourus entre 2017 et 2019 sous la présidence Trump, lorsque les "guerres culturelles" sont devenues un cri de guerre et que la notion selon laquelle les hautes clôtures font les bons voisins est devenue plus qu'une métaphore. Hübner est l'opposé de Robert Frank. Là où Frank cherchait le thème et le motif, avec des nuances de menace et de révélation, Hübner cherche l'anomalie et l'apparition - l'inexplicabilité soudaine. Il est ouvert à l'absurde, alors que Frank ne l'a jamais été. Cette vision est équilibrée - ou plutôt augmentée - par de nombreux portraits attentifs, où le jugement est mis de côté. La notion de portrait photographique a fait long feu. Mais dans ce livre, les portraits jouent un rôle clé. Ils ralentissent le rythme du voyage et déplacent l'attention des événements vers les personnes, des stéréotypes vers les individus. Tyler, de l'Oregon, vêtu d'une toge héroïque ; Robert, Paris et leur fille de la tribu Nez Perce, allongés ensemble dans une unité de protection ; une coupe de cheveux à domicile avec les Kirkpatricks dans les grands espaces de l'Ouest - ces portraits capturent un sentiment d'humanité, des personnes qui respirent en dehors du cadre. Peut-être les Américains ont-ils vraiment une vie intérieure. Pourtant, la question demeure : qu'a découvert Hübner au cours de ses voyages ? Est-ce simplement ce qu'il a apporté avec lui, les mythes, les icônes de la culture pop, la couverture médiatique sensationnelle et le scepticisme européen à l'égard d'une nation trop puissante pour son propre bien ? D'après ce qu'il a reproduit de ses conversations - lecture essentielle pour les photographies de ce livre - elles semblent confirmer tout ce que l'on pouvait déjà imaginer. Les Américains ont profondément peur, voire se méfient les uns des autres et ils sont armés. Comme Tocqueville l'avait compris il y a bien longtemps, les Américains sont prêts à se méfier - des autres Américains ! Mais si Hübner n'avait découvert que cela, il aurait mis fin à ses voyages bien plus tôt. Ce qui l'a poussé à continuer, c'est une autre chose qui a également émerveillé Tocqueville : l'ouverture et la générosité face à une personne totalement inconnue, l'étranger.

Cuckoos and cowbirds are amongst the select bird groups renowned as professional parasites, who always lay their eggs in the nests of other species. Occasional parasitic laying is also widespread in many other birds, who gladly parasitise the nests of their own kind when the opportunity arises.
In this fascinating new book, Nick Davies describes the natural histories of all the brood parasites and examines the exciting questions they raise about the evolution of cheating and the arms race between parasites and their hosts. Brood parasites fill their armoury with adaptations including exquisite egg mimicry, rapid laying, ejection of host eggs, murder of host young, chick mimicry and manipulative begging behaviour: ploys shown by recent research to have evolved in response to host defence behaviour or through competition among the parasites themselves. While many host species appear defenceless, accepting parasite eggs quite unlike their own, others are more discriminating against odd-looking eggs and some have evolved the ability to discriminate against odd-looking chicks as well. How does this arms race proceed? Will defenceless hosts improve their armoury in time, or are there sometimes constraints on hosts which allow the parasites to gain the upper hand? And why are so few species obliged only to lay eggs in host nests? Have host defences limited the success of brood parasitism, or is it in fact much commoner than we suspect, but occurring mainly when birds parasitise the nests of their own kind?

A discovery that will lead them to the military school at Saint Cyr de Coëtquidan, in the footsteps of their grandfather.

What The Super Mega Fuck!
Faisant suite au deux précédents ouvrages What The Fuck ! et What The Mega Fuck ! aux éditions le Monte-en-l'air en 2020, ce 3e opus de la collection WTF réunit des photographies en provenance du monde entier, collectées au fil de pérégrinations sur la Toile. Sur les réseaux sociaux et les sites Internet dont sont issues ces photographies, l'acronyme "WTF" précède souvent un contenu pour signifier l'effarement qu'il provoque. Cette interjection exprime autant l'incompréhension que le malaise du "voyeur" face à ces images. Leur accumulation souligne la course folle au partage de contenus "extra-ordinaires" pour un public anesthésié et pose la question de la dilution du sens de la photographie à l'aube du XXI ème siècle. Ces images incongrues sont vues par des millions d'internautes à un instant T, mais disparaissent définitivement au bout de quelques semaines. En éditant ces images dématérialisées et en les réunissant dans des ouvrages imprimés, la maison d'éditions Innocences s'approprie ces clichés et pose un acte de résistance face à la course à l'infini du Web. Innocences, à travers la publication de ces livres à tirage unique et numéroté, propose un véritable travail d'archiviste afin d'y consigner une certaine image de l'homme contemporain.

In an age of technological advancement, Toughware and the wiki implants were the culmination of the first successful blending of human and alien technology. Suddenly, anyone with a wiki implant could ride the data streams. Hackers became celebrities as the neural landscape became the world's playground. And for a special few, a startling side effect was discovered. Fearing the worst, the Lambda Initiative was created to police wiki infractions and to protect the fabled Lambda Time Travel Restrictions. Anyone, human or alien, attempting to bypass the Lambda Protocols was subject to prosecution under this new law. To enforce this law, the G-Men were created. Culled from specialists with military and law enforcement experience, the G-Men sought out Lambda Protocol violators with swift and violent response. With wiki crimes on the rise and a growing anti-alien movement gaining strength, something had to be done. The government needed a solution, but they weren't sure what to do. And then they discovered a teenage girl living in Brazil with a special affinity for traversing and moulding the data stream. They had discovered the first Googol. And the world was about to change.

Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radio broadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. Suite No. 1 is an interesting hybrid that conveys the most modern compositional structure in the genre of light music. Schmid composed it shortly after the end of his year as a master student of Schönberg in Berlin. Like his other works of the time, its unusual instrumentation already shows an effort to move on from classical "high forms" and compose in looser structures, with the free use of the twelve-tone technique providing inner coherence. "Dance", "Waltz", "March" are linked by two inserted "Intermezzi" and introduced by an "Introduction". Not all movements require full instrumentation and are designed for solo rather than group performance. The study is part of a wider comparative description of basic English language teaching in some of the smaller European countries, namely Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden. This first survey offers a discussion of the main issues in English language teaching in Denmark based entirely on Danish sources and on observations in various schools. Denmark is an interesting case of successful English language teaching at school, mainly in mixed-ability classes, with a high degree of support via private TV viewing in a climate of favourable attitudes toward Britain and the U.S.A. The discussion is broadened by looking at teacher education, the role of English outside school and the influence of the English language on Danish.

Beginning in the 1990s large numbers of women from Mainland China and Southeast Asia married men in Taiwan. They now number over 400,000, warranting some to call them "Taiwan's Fifth Ethnic Group". This book argues that the rise of these marriages is a gendered and relational phenomenon, linked to the forces of globalization. Traditional ideas of marriage, such as the belief that a woman "marries out" of her natal family to be dependent upon her husband and his family, and the idea that a man should "marry down" to a woman of a lesser social and economic status, have not kept pace with changes in women's educational and career opportunities. How these relationships are formed, how they impact gendered understandings of women and men, how families are constituted and relationships developed, and how they affect the children of these families and their education, are the issues explored in this book. It breaks new ground in our understanding of transnational and cross-border marriages by looking at the long-term effects of such marriages on communities, families, and individuals.

One Artist on Five Continents
Elisabet Delbrück (1876-1967) was one of a number of Germans who came to New Zealand in the late 1930s. Unlike most, she had not intended to emigrate but was touring the country when World War II broke out. She was at first forbidden to leave and then chose to remain in Wellington. Her thirty years in Mahina Bay on Wellington harbour had a profound effect on all who knew her. This study aims to discover why she was so remarkable. It explores her early life, her marriage into a prominent German family and her qualification as an artist. She turned this into a profession, teaching and exhibiting on five continents in the 1920s and 1930s. She always travelled alone, observing the customs and beliefs of the people she met. In Australia and New Zealand in 1938 and 1939 she was wrongly suspected of spreading Nazi propaganda. Her story is also the story of a heroic group of Wellingtonians who helped her in the 1940s and valued her friendship till her death.
