Commercially Speaking is an elementary to pre-intermediate level course in language and communication skills for students on vocational courses. This book deals with métissage in New France and Canada in the period 1508 to 1886. Métissage is understood as a syncretistic process of cultural, social and political encounter and mixture of ethnic groups that resulted from mixed marriages and relationships. Those led to the rise of the Métis people in North America, which were distinguished as French-speaking Métis and English-speaking Halfbreeds. The process of mixture began in 1508, when first Indians were shipped to France with the intention to use them as multipliers of French culture on their return to the colony. In 1886, the Act of Savages legally distinguished between "Indians" and "Metis", thus marking the beginning of a mixed-blood identity in Canada that was differentiated from neighbouring Whites, Indians and Inuit. The theoretical approach of the history of concepts is employed in the longue durée to show the variance throughout four centuries.

This volume contains a selection from the proceedings of a conference organised by the International Feuchtwanger Society titled ‘To Stay or not to Stay ? German-speaking Exiles in Southern California after 1945'. The conference, held in September 2011 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and at Villa Aurora in Pacific Palisades, explored the decision faced by all German-speaking exiles in Southern California at the end of World War II whether to return to Europe or stay in the United States. The volume opens with an analysis of the experiences of post-1945 remigrants as reflected in a major exile publication, Der Aufbau. Six chapters focus on the particular case of Lion Feuchtwanger, illuminating the circumstances which led him to remain in California after 1945. Subsequent chapters throw fresh light on other members of the German-speaking literary community in California. Studies focusing on remigration from the UK and the Soviet Union widen the discussion, as do chapters on the problems faced by professional musicians exiled in East Asia and in Palestine. The volume concludes with the experience of remigrants in the media and film industry during the early post-war years. Between 1900 and 1950, the development of German congregations in England was characterised by sudden unprecedented changes. Growth was followed by decline, marginalisation by expansion. The situation during and after World War I contrasted sharply with that during and after World War II. Being drawn into the German Church struggle German congregations in England experienced the conflict between nationalistic and ecumenical attitudes. They were challenged in particular by Bonhoeffer's theological stance and became a meeting-place for different cultural, political and spiritual traditions. World War II saw a new emphasis on the ministry among German-speaking refugees, as well as among civilian internees and military prisoners.

Although they have yet to be treated together in a comparative study, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Carl Sternheim had a number of points of convergence in their respective searches for a modern form for the serious comedy. This study documents the collegial relationship between the two authors - in part with previously unpublished archival material -, analyses their respective treatments of Molière's comedies and places this in the context of Molière's reception in the German-speaking countries since the 17th century. What emerges is a new view of the comedies of Hofmannsthal and Sternheim, which sees both dramatists applying the same technique of countermodelling Molière's constellations of comedic figures - a modern critical re-appraisal of the traditional comedic type character.

This study examines the way in which late medieval and early modern Germans envisioned the Balkan Slavic peoples. It deals with mental categories, such as images, perceptions, and attitudes, which the German-speaking subjects of the Holy Empire gradually developed during their increasingly frequent contacts with the Balkans in the period between 1400 and 1600. During that time span the Germans were constructing their own type of negative self-identification that served as a grid through which information about other peoples was processed. The closer definition of that grid and the types of images and attitudes produced by the encounter and bequeathed to modern Germans and, indeed, to the rest of Western Europe is one of the main goals of the book.

Some mechanical phenomena were recently described by boundary value problems on such networks : let us quote vibrating folded membranes, composite plates, folded plates, junctions in elastic multi-structures. In view to numerical applications, the singularities, as well as their coefficients (the so-called stress intensity factors) are described explicitly. The obtained decomposition into regular and singular parts also leads to the Fredholm property of the associated operator between appropriate Sobolev spaces.
