Vietnam. La guerre en face
Une histoire de la guerre du Vietnam en images. C'est une guerre non censurée. Aucun autre conflit n'a été aussi librement photographié. Ce livre raconte en images les hommes dans la guerre, au fil de la montée en puissance de la présence américaine sur le sol vietnamien. Les photographies intenses révèlent ce que vivent les soldats au combat et dans les camps, mais aussi la souffrance des civils au coeur d'une guerre d'insurrection où chacun est suspect pour son voisin. Les plus grands photoreporters. L'agence Associated Press s'est mobilisée sans réserve dans cette guerre. Son bureau de Saigon a accueilli des photojournalistes extraordinaires. On leur doit la plupart des images célèbres, ces icônes qui façonnèrent l'opinion publique. L'agence fut récompensée par six prix Pulitzer et trois World Press Photo, ce qui ne s'était jamais vu.

Songs of Love. 12 Romances. 12 Lieder. Soprano (tenor) and piano.
Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky's piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. Songs of Love was first published in 1904. No evidence survives of any public performance in Kashperova's lifetime although it is very likely that they were performed at her regular 'musical evenings at home on Tuesdays' mentioned in her Memoirs. The transparency of the piano writing strongly suggests that she would accompany herself singing. Kashperova, by all accounts, possessed a fine voice, and in the summer of 1906 she decided 'to learn from the artistry', as she put it, of the tenor Raimond von Zur-Mühlen who was widely celebrated for having developed (with Clara Schumann) the Lieder-Abend tradition. His summer-schools on the Baltic coast were frequented by aspiring singers from all over Europe, even Japan and India. Kashperova herself was responsible for the poetic lyrics of Songs of Love (in both Russian and German), which may well have emerged from her own bittersweet experience of life and love ; she was not to marry until 1916 at the age of forty-four. That Kashperova is the author of both the music and the lyrics of Songs of Love would suggest that they express very personal sentiments. Instrumentation : soprano (tenor) and piano

Integral Bridges. A fundamental approach to the time-temperature loading problem
Integral bridges have become increasingly popular in the UK over recent years. Problems and costs associated with failed expansion joints in conventional bridges not only make integral bridges a cost-effective option but also means they have longer lifespans that their counterparts. The Highways Agency standards now require that, wherever possible, all new bridges of less than 60 m length should be of integral form.
The growing importance of integral bridges has highlighted the need for more information and guidance to assist in improving bridge design. This book presents the results of research commissioned by the Highways Agency into the thermally induced soil/structure interaction created by environmental temperature changes and the associated cyclical displacements imposed on the granular backfill of bridge abutments. It :
develops a better theoretical understanding of temperature-induced cyclic displacements ; in particular the strain ratcheting in backfill soil in contact with a 'stiff' structure, identifies the governing soil parameters and examines their influence, develops numerical modelling procedures to predict soil behaviour, identifies and quantifies the controlling features of bridge structures relevant to the interaction problem

D’un empire, l’autre. Premières rencontres entre la France et le Japon au XIXe siècle
Au début des années 1800, les Japonais apprennent avec stupeur l'existence d'un empire en constante expansion dirigé par un certain Napoléon alors que les orientalistes parisiens commencent à réunir des livres sur cet archipel de l'autre bout du monde. La circulation de l'information établit une forme de "diplomatie de l'esprit" . A l'orée du XXe siècle, une nouvelle ère a déjà commencé : Japonais et Français ont établi des relations officielles depuis un demi-siècle et se côtoient désormais sur l'échiquier politique international. D'un empire, l'autre parcourt le premier siècle des contacts (indirects puis directs) entre la France et le Japon. Alors que les ombres d'un ancien monde se voient congédiées de la scène de l'histoire, la marche des temps modernes apparaît inexorable. Les auteurs de ce volume ont délibérément choisi d'explorer des thématiques différentes de celles souvent associées aux relations bilatérales telles que l'histoire diplomatique stricto sensu ou encore le succès du japonisme. Ils visent à interroger ce qui caractérise d'ordinaire les premières rencontres - l'espoir et l'incompréhension, le dialogue et la crainte, l'imaginaire et le réel - et éclairer ainsi des facettes méconnues de la relation franco-japonaise. In the early 1800s, the Japanese discovered to their amazement the existence of an ever-expanding empire ruled by a man called Napoleon. Meanwhile, Parisian orientalists started to acquire books on Japan and to dispel the shrouds of mystery surrounding this island country on the other side of the world. In authorized coteries and circles, the circulation of information encouraged the emergence of a "diplomacy of minds. " By 1900, a new era had dawned : official diplomatic ties had been established between the two countries since half a century and they were now rubbing elbows in the international political arena. Empire to Empire studies the first hundred years of indirect, then direct, contact between France and Japan. As shadows of an ancient world are ushered away from the stage, modernity appears to be unstoppable in its march. The contributors to this volume have chosen to explore subjects different from the issues most often associated with bilateral relations such as diplomatic history in the narrower sense or the triumphant success of Japonisme. Lydia, lying between the Aegean coast and the Anatolian plateau, has been associated since Antiquity with the Pactolus river, which carried gold from the Tmolus mountain, and with the wealth of Croesus. Populated by Lydians and Maeonians, and marked by the presence of Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, it has attracted the attention of researchers since the end of the 18th century. This book aims to cover the chronology of Lydian studies from the protohistoric period to the beginning of the Byzantine period and to bring together the contributions of international researchers and scholars from a wide range of disciplines that includes history, archeology, epigraphy, and numismatics, and from different perspectives. The various studies discuss society, social structures, military aspects, economy, religion, arts, architecture, and material culture. This diachronic approach makes it possible in particular to question continuity and discontinuity between the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, as well as with those that preceded them.

In this series of papers, we investigate the relative index theorem from the point of view of algebraic analysis. On a complex manifold X, let M he a coherent Dx-module and F an IR-mnstruc-tible sheaf. The complex RHompx (M, RHom(F, Ox)) is the complex of solutions of the system of PDE represented by M in the sheaf of generalized holomorphic functions associated to F. A natural problem is to find conditions under which such a complex has finite dimensional global cohomology and then to compute the corresponding Euler-Poincaré characteristic. We prove the finiteness theorem when (M, F) has compact support and is "elliptic", i.e. : char(M) n SS(F) C TxX where char(M) is the characteristic variety of M, SS(F) is the micro-support of F and TxX is the zero section of the cotangent bundle. In fact, we give a relative version of this finiteness result together with the associated duality theorem and Künneth formula. Our methods rely upon results of functional analysis over a .sheaf of Fréchet algebras obtained by one of the authors. Next, we attach a "microloeal Order class" µeu(M, F) E H2dx char M+SSF (T X ; D) to any elliptic pair (M, F) and prove that, under natural assumptions, this class is compatible with direct images, inverse images and external products. In particular, we get the index formula : X(RP(X ; RHom(M x F ; Ox))) = f yeu(M, F) T2xx (M) = fTX yeu (M) U yeu (F). When F = CM and X is a complexification of the real analytic manifold M, our salts for the pair (M, F) give an index theorem for elliptic systems and we discuss its relations with the Ariyah-Singer theorem.

Gustave Moreau. The Fables
Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) is one of the most brilliant and enigmatic artists associated with the French Symbolist movement. This book accompanies an exhibition of some of the most extraordinary works he ever made, unseen in public for over a century. Moreau's watercolours of the Fables of Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) were created between 1879 and 1885 for the art collector Antony Roux and their stylistic range encompasses historicism and the picturesque, orientalist fantasies and near-abstract chromatic experiments. They were exhibited to great acclaim in Paris in the 1880s and in London in 1886, where critics compared the artist to Edward Burne-Jones. One critic commented on Moreau's ' keen apprehension of the weird. ' There were originally 64 works in the series, which was subsequently acquired by Miriam Alexandrine de Rothschild (1884-1965), but nearly half were lost during the Nazi era. The surviving works have not been exhibited since 1906 and they have only ever been published in black and white. This book is the first to reproduce them in colour - many shown actual size. Created at the height of the French 19th-century revival of watercolour, the variety of subject matter and technique, their colouristic effects and the sophistication of Moreau's storytelling, will be a revelation to readers. Preparatory drawings for the Fables, including animal studies made from life in the Jardin des Plantes demonstrate the wide-ranging research that informed Moreau's visions. Prints after Moreau's Fables by Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914) translate the jewel-like colours into monochrome in some of the most innovative etchings of the age, while the most delicate effects of the watercolours were also transformed into vitreous enamels. In-depth accounts of each watercolour, explaining the story and exploring Moreau's response to it. The introduction will place the series in the long history of illustrations of La Fontaine's canonical work, whose sources include Aesop's fables and traditional European and Asian tales, as well as considering Moreau in the context of his own, turbulent, times.

Shakespeare's Reception in 18th Century Italy
The history of Shakespeare's reception in 18th century Italy is scanty and fragmentary. The present study attempts to join the scattered fragments of the mosaic together and to interpret the resulting picture in the light of current theories of comparative literature. Hamlet has been chosen as an exemplary case in Shakespearian production because it is associated with the very first milestones in Shakespeare's introduction into the Italian literary system. Hamlet also exemplifies on the one hand Italy's cultural indebtedness to France in the field of Shakespearian translation (the first Italian staging of a Shakespearian play was a Hamlet translated from Ducis' adaptation), and, on the other, the need for Northern European literary works to undergo profound changes before they could be assimilated in Italy. The process of Shakespeares's reception in 18th century Italy was made even more tortuous by a missed opportunity, again concerning Hamlet. The first complete Italian translation of the play by Alessandro Verri has never to this day been staged or published ; its impact on the development of Italian literature was only indirect through its influence on Verri's own creative works, which finally contributed to the birth of the Italian Romantic movement.

Alfred Sisley is now recognized as one of the great landscape painters of the nineteenth century, and a leading figure in the Impressionist movement. He divided his time between France and England, and the 55 colour illustrations in this book include the celebrated snow scenes of the Paris suburbs, his views of the flooded Seine at Port-Marly and his paintings of the colourful regattas on the Thames which Kenneth Clark described as embodying 'the perfect moment of Impressionism'. Richard Shone has completely updated his essay, first published in 1979, and selected new colour plates and added extensive commentaries on the illustrations to make this book an ideal introduction to the work of Alfred Sisley.

The Whitman-Hartmann Controversy
The facts in the relationship of Sadakichi Hartmann and Walt Whitman have never been clarified, particularly Hartmann's controversial interview with the poet and its publication in the "New York Herald", April 14, 1889. Of more importance was Hartmann's attempt to found a Whitman Society and the opposition of jealous Whitman associates who frustrated his efforts, although a Whitman Society was founded as the result of his initial work. Further, Hartmann's life-long interest in the poet and his various publications are not generally known. The introduction and edition of his writings will elucidate this literary association.

deValence is a graphic design studio founded in Paris in 2001. Published on the occasion of its exhibition at kyoto ddd gallery, this book presents a selection of works designed in the field of theater, architecture, design, publishing and contemporary art. deValence pays particular attention to typography and the process of shape forming. In tandem with this prolific activity, the studio has an associated publishing house, B42, which produces works that seek to stimulate reflection on and discussion of visual cultures and design as well as the role of the designer in society. For this first solo exhibition in Japan dedicated to the studio, the kyoto ddd gallery is presenting a selection of the studio's projects illustrating its contribution to the renewal of contemporary graphic design.

The Undergrowth of Science. Delusion, self-deception and human frailty
Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

Polygonal Interface Problems
The aim of this volume is to extend some of the classical results of Kondratiev, Maz'ya-Plamenevskii, Grisvard and Dauge, about the singular behaviour of the weak solution of a boundary value problem in a nonsmooth domain to the setting of boundary value problems on a two-dimensional polygonal topological network (roughly speaking it is a network such that each face is a polygon). Some mechanical phenomena were recently described by boundary value problems on such networks : let us quote vibrating folded membranes, composite plates, folded plates, junctions in elastic multi-structures. In view to numerical applications, the singularities, as well as their coefficients (the so-called stress intensity factors) are described explicitly. The obtained decomposition into regular and singular parts also leads to the Fredholm property of the associated operator between appropriate Sobolev spaces.

Argument Selection
A new thematic theory is demonstrated in this book. Thematic theories and their antecedents (Gruber 1965, Fillmore 1968) are to account for morphosyntactic phenomena (concerning argument structures) whose determining factors are likely to be of a semantic nature/origin. But what is the relevant semantic information ? And how is it to be captured (and formalized)? As is shown by the wide variety of competing current thematic theories, there is no consensus upon these crucial questions. The novel starting-point proposed in this book is the creation of a semantic basis where traditional roles (Agent, Patient, Instrument, etc.) are dispensed with. Instead, a special comparative analysis of morphologically related argument structure versions will provide the relevant semantic information, which makes it possible to associate argument frames with rich internal structures via exact formal calculations. Abstract positions in these internal structures are substituted for thematic roles, in harmony with the spirit of Saussure's structuralism.

Festschrift Günter Wagner
Günter Wagner, born 5 July 1928 in Jüterborg, Germany, studied theology in Hamburg and in Zurich, where he received a doctoral degree in 1960. From 1956 till 1958 he was employed as research assistant and representative of the German Free Churches at the Ecumenical Centre of the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Christlicher Kirchen" in Frankfurt. In 1958 he was appointed as instructor for New Testament Studies at the Baptist Theological Seminary, Rüschlikon, continuing as associate professor (1961), and professor of New Testament Studies (1965) for 35 years until his retirement in 1993. Günter Wagner is a member of numerous ecumenical committees and societies for biblical studies, and has taught as visiting professor and lecturer in Europe, America, and Africa. He is editor of "Exegetical Bibliographies" and co-editor of the book series "Die Kirchen der Welt" and the ecumenical journal Una Sancta ; he served on the editorial board of the exegetical journal "New Testament Studies". His publications of articles in biblical and exegetical journals and particularly his book on "Pauline Baptism and Pagan Mysteries" have established his scholarly reputation worldwide.

Scripts and Communication for Relationships
Over 200 years ago, Jane Austen, an astute observer of the rituals of late-eighteenth-century courtship wrote that a happy marriage was the result of chance. Modern relationship researchers have revealed that scripts concerning pair bonding rituals are actually constituted in a manner so as to leave little to chance when romantic attachments are formed, intensify, and sometimes dissolve. The Concept of Man in Igbo Myths
In the vast silence of their isolation, the traditional Igbos have learnt the ways of living in harmony with nature. From their origin in distant time, they have kept a sacred perspective on the natural world. In our age, there is the need for traditional wisdoms to retain their validity and be intrinsic to our philosophic and scientific perceptions of the cosmos. We cannot do without their knowledge, their spiritual perspective, and their deep faith in the harmony of all nature. Ignoring these qualities has profound environmental implications. Global warming, environmental pollution, and the exhaustion of nature's resources are but a few of the symptoms of the nature's experiences as we continue to mistreat it in order to satisfy our own ends. This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us. Then we find them reflecting in ourselves, because we are nature, though not identical with it.

A picture named "Doctor Gachet's portrait" has been stolen a night from a museum. Immediately, the news offer the event and our heroes start the research after some clue that leads them to the thief. After travelling across some countries following his trace, they realize that a smuggling network is behind the robbery, led by minister Goring. Among their loot is an enormous amount of pictures stolen from private collectors, with the aim of transporting and hiding them beyond their frontiers.
