New York Book. Dessins pour The New Yorker
Joost Swarte contribue au légendaire magazine The New Yorker depuis 1994. Ce livre présente plus de 450 dessins réalisés pour l'hebdomadaire pendant ces vingt ans : croquis, illustrations de toutes tailles, et bien sûr, toutes les couvertures exécutées par le maître néerlandais. Joost Swarte fait de la bande dessinée depuis 1968. Dans la plus pure des lignes claires, il met en scène et en jeu des thèmes complexes et contemporains. Ses histoires ont paru dans Tante Leny Presenteert, Charlie Mensuel et Raw Magazine. Il combine ses activités d'auteur de bande dessinée à celles d'illustrateur, d'architecte, de graphiste, de typographe... et même de créateur de vitraux.

The Pogues. Fairytale of New York
Fêter Noël dans une cellule de dégrisement. Quel programme ! "Fairytale Of New York" est décidemment l'anti "All I Want For Christmas Is You" (ou l'inverse, puisque le premier single date de 1987, le second de 1994). Très très loin du duo Justin Bieber / Mariah Carey, Shane McGowan s'adjoint le talent incommensurable de la regrettée Kirsty McColl. Malgré un enregistrement en plein cagna de l'été, les Pogues ont su capturer la magie de Noël pour un hymne punk et folk. Il n'en fallait pas plus pour Yann Liotard, grand fan des Pogues devant l'Eternel (au point d'avoir déjà écrit un livre sur le deuxième LP, Rum, Sodomy And The Lash aux Editions Densité dans la collection Discogonie), pour se plonger dans l'histoire du plus parfait single irish de Noël. Puis de visiter d'autres Christmas songs plus ou moins subversives.

LE FAC-SIMILE DE LA FAMEUSE NEW YORK TRILOGY Le coffret présenté rassemble les manuscrits inédits des trois tomes de la fameuse New York Trilogy de Paul Auster. De la première ébauche de City of Glass à un manuscrit très abouti de The Locked Room, en passant par une version dactylographiée intermédiaire de Ghosts, le fac-similé reflète toutes les strates d'une écriture caractérisée par la reprise. SECRETS ET METAMORPHOSES DE L'ECRITURE DE PAUL AUSTER Parmi les rares auteurs contemporains à écrire encore à la main, Paul Auster le fait avec une méthode et une minutie rarement égalées. Comme il le confie dans un entretien, il commence toujours par esquisser son histoire en des termes très vagues, avant d'entamer la rédaction dans des cahiers. Il procède alors paragraphe par paragraphe, les retravaillant jusqu'à les rendre "si familiers, si organiques qu'ils commencent à paraître indestructibles" . Une fois chaque paragraphe bien fixé dans les cahiers, il tape les textes à la machine pour les relire et les corriger à la main. Les textes rassemblés dans ce fac-similé sont donc chargés de toutes les corrections de l'auteur. Il révèle également des références littéraires et cinématographiques qui ont disparu des textes publiés. UNE PLONGEE DANS LES ARCHIVES DE LA PRESTIGIEUSE BERG COLLECTION Des premières esquisses manuscrites aux versions dactylographiées quasi définitives, Paul Auster a gardé tous les matériaux qui ont servi à l'écriture de ses romans. Pour plonger dans les dédales infinis de sa création, nous sommes allés explorer les abondantes archives conservées au sein de la prestigieuse Berg collection, à la New York Public Library. C'est là, parmi des dossiers remplis d'esquisses et de brouillons, que nous avons choisi avec Paul Auster les manuscrits présentés dans le coffret.

Bourdichon's Boston Hours
This absorbing book explores the crown jewel of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's collection of rare books and manuscripts : Jean Bourdichon's Boston Hours. As court artist to King François I of France, Bourdichon produced paintings, books and even parade floats for the sovereign and his entourage. This publication accompanies the museum's first ever exhibition dedicated to this spectacular illuminated manuscript. Painter to two kings, Jean Bourdichon remains today one of the most celebrated artists of the French Renaissance. By age twenty-four, he was already serving as "peintre du roy, " a title which Bourdichon held for the rest of his life. His illustrious career at the French royal court led to a wide range of commissions- from portraits to wall maps to stained glass-but he is remembered principally for astonishing illuminated manuscripts. The peerless Grandes Heures for Queen Anne of Brittany remains the touchstone of this group which includes some of the most lavishly painted books of hours ever produced. One of these masterpieces-Bourdichon's Boston Hours-in the collection of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is the subject of this book. Bourdichon's only intact book of hours in the United States was acquired by Isabella Stewart Gardner in 1890 and became the crown jewel of her collection of rare books and manuscripts. Leading scholars Nicholas Herman and Anne-Marie Eze explore its history in depth, shedding new light on the book's patronage and provenance- from the shelves of a wealthy Catholic landowner in Lincolnshire to the shop of a Venetian art and antiques dealer. This book forms the complement to the first volume published in 2000. The preface contains some remarks about the transmission of the text as a supplement to the first volume. Then follow the critical edition of books VI-X, and the indices for the whole text. The complete edition gives access to the longest and most important work from Aristotle's zoology, De historia animalium, in the Latin translation by William of Moerbeke. This version was part of the standard university curriculum in the late-medieval West. The bilingual indices give access to the richness of the translator's vocabulary and provide an indispensable tool for the study of his translation method. Except for De partibus animalium, all of Moerbeke's translations from the Aristotelian zoological corpus are now available in critical editions.

Voilà une question qu'aurait pu poser le critique Pierre Bayard et à laquelle Philippe Delerm apporte une réponse pleine et jubilatoire : en composant un recueil de textes courts de toutes ses approches de la ville fantasmée. Aimer New York et ne vouloir jamais y aller : Delerm a fait de cette idée une passion irradiant toute sa vie, brillante comme une bille de verre gardée jalousement au fond de sa poche. Dans son livre, il passe en revue tour à tour ces photographies de la skyline et des gratte-ciels qui apprivoisent le ciel ; le souvenir d'amis revenant de voyage avec des adresses de restaurants où il ne dînera jamais ; une rue de Greenwich Village aperçue sur une pochette de disque de Dylan ; le parc de Washington Square où se déroule un roman. Quentin Blake and the Demoiselles des Bords de Seine
Quentin Blake is one of the best-known illustrators of our time. He was Roald Dahl's regular illustrator, and their books have enjoyed world popularity with generations of children. Blake has collaborated with many other well-known authors and also created his own picture-books such as Clown and Zagazoo. Quentin Blake was born in England in 1932. For more than 20 years he taught in and then led the illustration department of the Royal College of Art. In 1999 he became the first Children's Laureate and in 2005 was appointed CBE for his services to children's literature. In France, where he spends a great deal of his time and where he has been published by Gallimard for the past 30 years, Quentin Blake has the same huge reputation as in Great Britain. His work has been exhibited there, and he has produced several books especially for French readers. In 2002 he was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. It was on account of this reputation that he was invited by the Petit Palais to select and present the exhibition Quentin Blake et les Demoiselles des Bords de Seine, and in the exhibition and this book he displays his enthusiasm for 19th century French art with a perceptiveness and liveliness which will speak to readers of all ages.

Invité par le New York Herald à parcourir les États-Unis pour donner une suite de chroniques françaises à ce journal, le très conservateur Paul Bourget (1852-1935) arrive à New York au mois d'août 1893. Il visite la ville en touriste, a du mal avec la réalité sociale américaine, mais ne peut s'empêcher de céder aux clichés du "colossal" et du "formidable". Un exemple étonnant de la fascination exercée par la "capitale" du Nouveau Monde.

Activation Policies for the Unemployed, the Right to Work and the Duty to Work
Since the 1990s and the 2000s, Western social protection systems have experienced a turn towards activation. This turn consists of the multiplication of measures aimed at bringing those who are unemployed closer to participation in the labour market. These measures often induce a strengthening of the conditions that must be met in order to receive social benefits. It is in this well known context that the authors gathered in this book decided to take a closer look at the relationship between activation policies for the unemployed and the right and the duty to work. If activation measures are likely to increase transitions towards the labour market, we can also make the assumption that they may, particularly when they are marked with the seal of coercion, hinder or dramatically reduce the right to freely chosen work. In such circumstances, the realisation of the "right to work", which is often stated to be the aim of those who promote activation, tends in practice to be reduced to an increasing pressure being exerted on the unemployed. In this case, isn't it actually the duty to work that is particularly reinforced ? After an historical and philosophical perspective on the issue, this assumption is confronted with the developments observed in the United States and in France, and then with the guidelines laid down in international human rights instruments. What follows is a discussion of two alternatives to the dominant activation model : the basic income guarantee and the employment guarantee.

Learning GLIM will almost certainly change the way you do statistics. The flexibility and generality of the GLIM language encourage a different approach to statistical analysis, which stresses parameter estimation and model criticism rather than hypothesis testing. The GLIM package can handle most of the models that ecologists are likely to fit to their data, including log-linear models of count data using Poisson errors, logistic regression of proportion data using binomial errors, and a wide variety of models for the analysis of survival data.
