Nietzsche and the End of Freedom
Nietzsche's writing is not some game of 'freeplay' and terms like 'intertextuality' are useless in discussing its influence. This study takes Nietzsche, then Kafka's Trial, Thomas Mann's Death in Venice, Heinrich Mann's Man of Straw, Rilke's Malte Laurids Brigge and Musil's Törless. It argues that Nietzsche mediates and modernises the dilemmas of Romanticism and that a properly differentiated account of his literary reception can illuminate the dynamics of German culture on the eve of the Great War.

De fait, le spectaculaire récit autobiographique de Sam Millar a tout d'un thriller. A ceci près que si on lisait pareilles choses dans un roman, on les trouverait bien peu crédibles. Catholique, Millar combat avec l'IRA et se retrouve à Long Kesh, la prison d'Irlande du Nord où les Anglais brutalisent leurs prisonniers. Indomptable, il survit sans trahir les siens : voilà pour la partie la plus noire, écrite avec fureur et un humour constant. Réfugié aux Etats-Unis après sa libération, il conçoit ce qui deviendra le 5e casse le plus important de l'histoire américaine. La manière dont il dévalise le dépôt de la Brinks à Rochester, avec un copain irlandais, des flingues en plastique et une fourgonnette pourrie, est à ne pas croire. Même Dortmunder, dans un roman de Westlake, s'y prendrait mieux. Il n'empêche, le butin dépasse les 7 millions de dollars ! Un procès et une condamnation plus tard, il retrouve la liberté, mais entre-temps, la plus grande partie de l'argent a disparu. Millar semble avoir été roulé par ses complices... Saura-t-on jamais la vérité ? En tout cas, le FBI cherche toujours !

The work shows the usefulness and limitation of modern logic in the study of traditional metaphysical problems. As is the usual case in all criticism of analytic philosophers against traditional philosophy, word usage must be limited to what the human mind can know. The notion of timeless knowledge for example contradicts our normal mode of word usage and cannot serve as adequate in reference to knowledge be it that of man or of God. If timeless knowledge applied to divine mode of knowing then there cannot be human freedom.

The Image of the Woman in the Works of Ingeborg Bachmann
In this study an analysis of the women characters, who play a dominant part in Bachmann's prose writings, was presented. The results suggested a complex but coherent image. It was found that although the characteristics of this image deserved the appellation "sex-specific" and "traditional" they were infused with new values : the values of individualism, of a specifically female identity and of particular intense personal freedom. It was also found that the theme of personal freedom underlies all motivations, conflicts and situations of tragedy of Bachmann's heroines. Finally, it was found that the image of the woman is not only part of a distinct female-male antithesis, which often assumes violent dimensions, but has a redeeming function for a de-humanized world.

The Phenomenology of Freedom in Kleist's Die Familie Schroffenstein</I> and "Penthesilea</I>"
This study describes from an ontological perspective the foundation of freedom in two of Kleist's dramas. The novelty of this approach lies in the author's departure from the ontic considerations of freedom characterizing traditional Kleist scholarship. The present study advocates a de-construction of Kleist's concept of freedom back to its ontological basis : freedom is a cooperative enterprise of man and his situation. It is the author's contention that freedom in Kleist's works, rather than being defined by "a priori" categories, ensues primarily from the situation wherein it is being enacted. Man's relation to this situation is explored in a universal (Schroffenstein) and particular (Penthesilea) environment.

The Dramatic Encounter of Divine and Human Freedom in the Theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar
This book surveys the major theological writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar from the perspective of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom. The first part examines Balthasar's early treatment of the question in the context of the analogy of being. The second part concentrates on his more mature work, the Theological Dramatics, with its understanding of the relationship between finite and infinite freedom in terms of a 'dramatic encounter' in which, controversially, human freedom is thought to actively participate in an ever-greater exchange of love in God. But this book is more than a survey. Observing the persistence of the 'analogy of proportionality' within the Dramatics leads the author in the third part to a critique of Balthasar's thought. It is argued that the continuation of the earlier perspective explains Balthasar's emphasis on the freedom of the individual to the neglect of social structures and their transformation. While the 'historical' as such is not neglected, as some claim it is, the focus is on the history of the individual and his or her relationship with God. It is therefore contended that Balthasar's theology of the Trinity is more concerned with 'interpersonal' relationships than truly 'social' ones and that this is what inhibits a fruitful dialogue with social theologies.

Stars and Stellar Evolution
The diverse forms that stars assume in the course of their lives can all be derives from the initial conditions : the mass and the original chemical composition. In this textbook the basic concepts of stellar structure and the main roads of stellar evolution are described. First, the observable parameters are presented, which are based on the radiation emerging from a stellar atmosphere. Then the bascphysics is described, such as the physics of gases, radiation transport, and nuclear processes, followed by essential aspects of modelling the structure of stars. After a chapter on star formation, the various steps in the evolution of stars are presented. This leads us to brown dwarfs, to the way of star changes into the red-giant state and numerous other stages of evolution and ultimately to the stellar ashes such as white dwarfs, supernovae and neutron stars. Stellar winds, stellar rotation and convection all influence the way a star evolves. The evolution of binary stars is included by using several canonical examples in which interactive processes lead to X-Ray binaries and supernovae of type la. Finally, the consequence of the study of stellar evolution are tied to observed mass ans luminosity functions and to the overall evolution of matter in the universe.

God's People: Instruments of Healing
The future impact of the churches on the societies in which they are situated depends on how they are experienced as healing and solidarizing communities (concerning their religious and social praxis) within themselves and to the outside. Exactly this is the question of the diaconical dimension of the church : the question of how much love (in terms of mercy and justice) and freedom (to the individual and to society) are being spread by the churches in this world. Theologically this book refers not only to the biblical foundations but also to the latest theology of the II Vatican Council (and of the appropriate understanding of the term "Evangelization") within the Catholic Church, without suggesting that this theological position is something exclusive in the ecumenical sphere. It rather may support similar theologies emerging from other churches, as a kind of offer to solidarize with each other looking for the possibilities of substantiating the Christian faith.

"On liberty" by John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), one of the most versatile thinkers of the nineteenth century, wrote on the newly emerging sciences of economics, politics and sociology. His Principles of Political Economy (1848) ran to many editions and is still read today, while his book on Utilitarianism (1863) is better known than the writings of Jeremy Bentham. On Liberty (1859) was written at a time when the Industrial Revolution, the rise of a sizeable middle class and its social influence, the growing democratisation of British politics raised questions about the place of individuals and the dangers of this new mass society. Mill placed much faith in this passionate and cogently argued plea for individual freedom, writing in his Autobiography : The liberty is likely to survive longer than anything else I have written... . The future was to prove him right, and his defence of freedom of thought and speech, of individuality and originality, later used to criticise the various instances totalitarianism in the twentieth century, is still relevant these days.

Entre deux coups de fil à ses avocats, avec lesquels il s'efforce d'être patient, il aperçoit Don DeLillo dans le jardin voisin. Adapter son chef-d'oeuvre, Bruit de fond, au cinéma. Voilà. C'est LE moment de faire ce film, braille-t-il au téléphone en attendant l'arrivée d'un médecin qui lui fera une perfusion, une nouvelle thérapie, à la pointe. Devant le miroir, Harvey songe qu'il doit se faire blanchir les dents. Il demandera à son assistante de lui prendre rendez-vous, et de lui trouver un restau où emmener DeLillo. Ah, et sa fille Kristin vient dîner ce soir avec Ruby, sa petite-fille. Tout le monde semble penser qu'il joue sa vie, demain. Il ne voit pourtant pas de raison de s'inquiéter, surtout quand il lit les commentaires de soutien sur internet - il y en a -, surtout après la perfusion qui le fait dériver dans l'espace. Hilma af Klint. The Five Notebook 1
In 1896, Hilma af Klint and four other like-minded women artists left the Edelweiss Society and founded the "Friday Group", also known as "The Five". They met every Friday for spiritual meetings, including prayers, studies of the New Testament, meditation and séances. The medium exercised automatic writing and mediumistic drawing. Eventually they established contact with spiritual beings whom they called "The High Ones". In 1896, the five women began taking meticulous notes of the mediumistic messages conveyed by the spirits. In time, Hilma af Klint felt she had been selected for more important messages. After ten years of esoteric training with "The Five", aged 43, Hilma af Klint accepted a major assignment, the execution of The Paintings for the Temple. This commission, which engaged the artist from 1906 to 1915, changed the course of her life. In 1908, Rudolf Steiner, leader of the German Theosophical Society, held several lectures in Stockholm. He also visited af Klint's studio and saw some of the early Paintings for the Temple. In 1913, Steiner founded the Anthroposophical Society, which af Klint joined in 1920 and remained a member for the rest of her life.

Taylor Davis est écrivain. S'il a connu le succès par le passé, sa carrière est à présent en berne et ses livres se vendent de moins en moins. Mais ce n'est pas très important à ses yeux car Taylor travaille pour l'amour de l'art. Et justement, le nouveau roman sur lequel il se penche depuis des mois l'enthousiasme tout particulièrement. Il s'agit de l'histoire d'un couple située dans les années 1950 et dont l'héroïne se prénomme Stella. Celle-ci s'interroge suc m vie et se pose tellement de questions que Taylor s'est mis à lui répondre et a engagé un véritable dialogue avec elle. Est-ce un signe de schizophrénie ? Pour Taylor, en tout cas, Stella est plus qu'un personnage de fiction. Si bien qu'un jour, alors qu'il vint presque malgré lui de taper le mot "FIN" sur son clavier d'ordinateur, Stella apparaît devant lui. Comme si ces trois petites lettres, à la manière d'une incantation, lui avaient permis de prendre corps dans la réalité! Mais comment un personnage de fiction pourrait-il vivre au sein du monde réel, qui plus est dans me époque qui n'est pas la sienne. Pour Taylor, test la fin d'un roman. Mais pour Stella et lui, c'est le début... d'une histoire.

Mathilde, une mère attentionnée, fera ce qu'il faudra pour permettre à son fils de vivre de sa passion pour le dessin. Appelé sous les drapeaux, l'adolescent devenu homme revient à la ferme avant de se rendre à Mourmelon. La moisson bat son plein. Stella elle, n'a jamais quitté Croix-Fonsomme. Très vite, les vies s'entrelacent, mais la séparation est proche. Seule à Mirecourt, Stella s'amenuise. Les cours de violon de Cesare, le maître-luthier lui redonnent de l'énergie. De Mourmelon à Saarbrücken, puis Constantine, les promesses semblent ne plus engager que celui qui les a faites. Entre Baudelaire et La Fontaine, maintenant, il faut choisir. En remettant leur destin entre les mains de la Semeuse, pouvait-elle s'imaginer que leur histoire ressemblerait à cela ?

«Phädon», or «On the Immortality of the Soul»
This is the first modern translation of Moses Mendelssohn's classic work of 1767, the Phädon. It includes Mendelssohn's own introduction and appendix, as well as footnotes and explanatory introduction by David Shavin. (Charles Cullen's translation of 1789 is the only other extant translation.) The "modern Socrates" of the German classical period, Mendelssohn has created a beautiful translation and elaboration of Plato's Phädo led to a revolution in thought, and a subsequent renaissance in Germany. The debt of the German classical period to ancient Greece is embodied in Mendelssohn's Phädon, as is the promise of the American Revolution. Freedom Hospital
Freedom Hospital est la première bande dessinée de Hamid Sulaiman, artiste plasticien syrien qui a fui son pays en 2011 et trouvé refuge en France après une année dans la clandestinité. Sulaiman s'inspire d'histoires vécues par des personnes de son entourage pour raconter les débuts de la guerre en Syrie, des premières manifestations pacifiques de 2011 jusqu'aux prémices de Daech.
Son récit est centré sur le Freedom Hospital, un hôpital clandestin créé par une militante pacifique, Yasmine, dans une ville imaginaire semblable à beaucoup de petites villes de province syriennes… Dans cet hôpital cohabitent avec Yasmine une dizaine de personnages, malades et soignants, reflétant la diversité de la société syrienne, un kurde, un alaouite, une journaliste franco-syrienne, des membres de l'Armée libre et un islamiste radical. Leurs relations vont évoluer en fonction des événements.
Engagement politique, trahisons, retournements d'alliance et l'horreur de la guerre sont au cœur de l'histoire de ce groupe d'individus, pantins de l'histoire, pris dans une tourmente dont les enjeux les dépassent totalement.
À travers ce terrible récit, mis en scène de façon expressionniste, avec de très forts contrastes de lumière qui noient les hommes et la ville sous un déluge d'ombres et de lumière, Hamid Sulaiman pousse un cri de rage contre la guerre, pour l'amour et la paix.

Covenant and Liberation
This book springs from the practical interaction of two absorbing interests : in covenant, thanks to many years of lecturing on the Scriptures, in which covenants provide a sure road from start to finish of the Bible ; and in liberation, an interest sharpened by more than a decade of working in a Lima parish with people struggling desperately to break free from the cycle of poverty, oppression and premature death. Theirs is part of the struggle for liberation throughout Latin America and many other parts of our global home. Reflecting with the poor on their situation in the light of the Scriptures has led to a fuller realization that covenant and liberation are two sides of the same coin - liberation is for covenant, and covenant is to consolidate and promote freedom as befits God's family. First comes a synthesis of the biblical covenants, indicating their continuity but also the unique characteristics of each one. Special attention is paid to the new covenant, often reflected in terms of kingdom, community, family and mutual love. Then it is indicated how new light may be drawn from such a central biblical theme in order to view correctly and share personally in today's liberation struggles.
