Brief history of venise
Breve storia di Venezia a été écrite par un célèbre abbé vénitien, Rinaldo Fulin et elle a été publiée pour la première fois en 1873 comme cadeau de mariage. Fulin rappelle l'histoire de Venise des origines à la chute de la République, à travers le passé glorieux et la splendeur de la Sérénissime et de ses principaux acteurs. Un bref chapitre sur l'histoire moderne et contemporaine de la ville a été ajouté au texte original. Le volume est enrichi d'une collection d'illustrations tirées de Il gran teatro di Venezia de Domenico Lovisa (1717).

Charge of the Bull
Few will deny that 11th Bristish Armoured Division, the "Charging Bulls" of this story, was the finest armoured division on any side in the Normandy campaign in 1944. Soon after the end of the war, the history of the Division, Taurus Pursuant, was published in England in 1946. About 30 years later, Jean Brisset published his French-language book, La Charge du Taureau, about the same Division. It quickly went through two editions in France. What ensured its success was that it enlivened and humanized the well-know official accounts of the Division's battles in Operations EPSOM, GOODWOOD, BLUECOAT and others with the personal stories of participants in those battles who were often soldiers of humble but honourable rank. In addition, he paralleled the British military story with accounts of the experiences of French civilians caught up in the terror of thoses same battles, the anguish of theur tragedies and losses and the joy of their liberation. It is a history unique of its kind and deserves to be presented in this English translation. In addition to the story about 11th Armoured Division an Appendix telles about the battles in the Normandy bocage fought alongside the "Charging Bulls" by the hard-fighting 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division and how the local civilians and Resistance fighters helped them. Another Appendix recounts, among other adventures, how a little 5-year-old French girl saved an Australian Spitfire pilot from recapture by the Germans after he had been shot clown in the bocage. Finally, an Epilogue brings the story up to date. It pays homage to those, both British and French, who strove to keep alive the flames of remembrance, mutual gratitude and friendship. Containing over 100 photographs and illustrated by 9 maps, specially draw for this edition, The Charge of the Bull is a nostalgic trip back for those who fought in Normandy in 1944 and an important addition to the litterature about that campaign.

The History of German Lutheran Congregations in England, 1900-1950
Between 1900 and 1950, the development of German congregations in England was characterised by sudden unprecedented changes. Growth was followed by decline, marginalisation by expansion. The situation during and after World War I contrasted sharply with that during and after World War II. Being drawn into the German Church struggle German congregations in England experienced the conflict between nationalistic and ecumenical attitudes. They were challenged in particular by Bonhoeffer's theological stance and became a meeting-place for different cultural, political and spiritual traditions. World War II saw a new emphasis on the ministry among German-speaking refugees, as well as among civilian internees and military prisoners.

Cuvier's History of the Natural Sciences - the Eighteenth Century
"L'histoire des sciences naturelles depuis leur origine jusqu'à nos jours" est présentée ici pour la première fois en édition bilingue. Ce volume, amplement annoté et commenté, est le quatrième d'une série de cinq tomes regroupant les cours professés par Georges Cuvier de 1829 à 1832. Cette étude de grande envergure couvre de manière chronologique l'histoire des sciences naturelles au XVIIIe siècle. Le lecteur a ainsi accès à l'atelier historique de Georges Cuvier. Loin d'être une activité lui paraissant annexe au regard de ses travaux d'anatomiste, Cuvier y consacra un temps important, consultant de très nombreux ouvrages en de multiples langues (anglais, allemand, espagnol, latin, français). Elle lui conférait aussi une grande notoriété. Prononcées au Collège de France, ces leçons s'adressaient à un public large et consacraient son magistère sur les sciences naturelles de l'époque. Cuvier y présentait l'histoire des sciences comme une marche continue dont il scandait le développement. Il considérait les siècles ici étudiés comme une période de profonds changements. Louant la lutte contre les "dogmatismes religieux, il en faisait le vecteur d'une nouvelle liberté de pensée et d'écrire. Reléguant l'étude des anciens, les sciences naturelles seraient ainsi entrées dans un nouvel âge, celui de l'observation et de la classification.

The History and some Problems of Television Service in Anambra State of Nigeria
The television medium has reached the heights of complication. This complication is the aftereffect of the fact that broadcasting in itself (both TV and Radio) recognizes little or no boundaries. Broadcasting breaks the boundaries of, inter alia, political, cultural, linguistic, socio-economical and socio-psychological identities. It reaches extensive "possibilities" embracing, collecting and connecting nationalities and people, languages and cultures. This situation must continue to raise the question why such a global-transcontinental and transnational communications' "inter-flux". This work is in this context an aid towards possible solutions of the present question on the TV-medium. The interest of this work can be said to be the presentation of facts that brought Anambra State of Nigeria to this "embrace" of the world's extensive television technology.

Le portrait Klesch, par Titien, de Guidobaldo II avec son fils Francesco Maria représente le duc d'Urbino dans ses pleins pouvoirs de commandant suprême des troupes papales avec son héritier à ses côtés. Ce rare double portrait en pied vient seulement d'être attribué à Titien après avoir entrepris des analyses et une restauration minutieuses qui révèlent une belle peinture au style "non finito" avec de superbes touches d'empâtement totalement typiques au maître. Tout ceci est illustré et développé dans ce nouveau livre. Titian provided portraits for the greatest men and women of Europe, Charles V and Philip II of Spain primary among them. For years the Klesch portrait was dismissed as a workshop product - partly because poor condition hid its true quality, but also because it was not believed that Titian could have deigned to create one for Guidobaldo, whose father Guidobaldo della Rovere (1514-1574) and family had a long history of patronizing the artist. Recent research, however, has thrown Guidobaldo's geopolitical significance into relief. He was supreme commander of Venice, the Papal States and then Spain. He sent thousands of soldiers to the major conflicts of his day, particularly the defense of Malta (1565) and the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and his engineers were sought throughout Europe for their ingenuity. In this volume full of new research, Ian Verstegen reveals that Guidobaldo was not peripheral but central to Italian politics and was regarded at several points in history as a key figure who could bring peace or who could influence major conflicts on the Italian peninsula, particularly the War of Siena, and then Pope Paul IV's offensive war against Spain. Anne-Marie Eze gives the first comprehensive examination of the painting's provenance, outlining the portrait's vicissitudes and reception at different moments in its near 500-year history, reexamining received wisdom about its past ownership, and presenting new documentary evidence to expand on and fill gaps in our knowledge of its whereabouts. Finally, Matthew Hayes and Ian Kennedy reflect on the technique, date, recent conservation, and authorship of the painting, proving it to be a masterpiece that only the great Titian could have created.

900 Years of St Bartholomew's. The History, Art and Architecture of London's Oldest Parish Church
This important book presents a comprehensive history of St Bartholomew the Great, the oldest parish church in London. In 2023, the Priory Church and Hospital will celebrate the 900th anniversary of their foundation. At the heart of the Smithfield area, with its hospital, pubs, restaurants and market, is a church built when Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, was King of England. Overlooking the fields where kings confronted rebellions, knights jousted and heretics were burnt, St Bartholomew's Priory and Hospital played a central role in the history of medieval London. Partially torn down by order of Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Priory was reborn as a parish church. It served the City of London through the tumultuous years of the Reformation and the Civil War and has played host to many of London's most famous residents. William Hogarth was baptized in its font. Charles Wesley preached in its pulpit. Benjamin Franklin served as a printer's apprentice in its former Lady Chapel. John Betjeman lived across the street and memorialized it in his poetry. The history of St Bartholomew's is a tale of miraculous survival and continual renewal. It came out unscathed from the Great Fire of 1666 and the bombs dropped in Zeppelin raids in World War I and during the Blitz in World War II. Its splendid Romanesque core has been added to by each successive generation. This volume - the first comprehensive history of the Church since 1921 - will survey the art, architecture and historical significance of the City of London's oldest parish church in a scholarly, yet accessible tone. Richly illustrated, this book will appeal to those interested in the history of the City of London, in medieval and Victorian church architecture, in funerary monuments, and in the history of the Church of England.

L'ouvrage vise à offrir aux professeurs un support pour leurs cours d'Histoire-Géographie en classes européennes d'anglais. Il propose une sélection de thèmes du programme de 1ère vus sous l'angle du monde anglo-saxon. 9 chapitres (5 en Histoire / 4 en Géographie) Chaque chapitre comprend : En ouverture : une courte introduction, la "Key question", un grand document questionné, une ou deux cartes afin de se repérer en anglais. En histoire, une frise pour resituer la période dans le contexte anglo-saxon. 2 ou 3 leçons ouvertes par une problématique, des documents variés regroupés par thème, une "Word box" (du vocabulaire pour comprendre les documents et les commenter) et une synthèse à faire par l'élève ou le professeur avec sa classe. "Get ready for the exam" et "On your own" : des sujets guidés ou non pour s'entraîner à l'épreuve orale du bac. "To sum up" : une synthèse rassemblant les connaissances des leçons accompagnée des "keywords" (sélection des notions essentielles du chapitre). "Express yourself" : un exercice inspiré des pratiques anglo-saxonnes, pour encourager la prise de parole par un jeu de rôle, un débat... "Digging deeper" : des suggestions de lectures, de sites, de films.
